About us

Kinderrechte Afrika e. V. (KiRA) is a non-profit organization for the protection of children’s rights in African countries. Founded in Lahr, Germany, in 1995, KiRA aims at the holistic development of children and young people by promoting their access to basic human and children's rights. This way, they are enabled to deal with the challenges of the future and to take on responsibilities in their families, social communities and societies. We currently coordinate various children's rights projects in Mali, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Cameroon.

Our Vision
All children may grow up, regardless of where they come from, in a political, communal and social environment, which protects and promotes their basic rights and dignity. They grow to be peaceful and responsible citizens, who contribute to shaping our common future.
The first United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child, called the Geneva Declaration of 1924, states “mankind owes to the child the best that it has to give”. In this sense, we aim at contributing sustainably to enforcing the basic and inalienable rights of children and young people in Africa.

Our Mission
We want to contribute to create and strengthen a protective and supportive environment for children in our African partner countries.
In this sense, it is important to us, that:
• Basic needs of children are met and children are protected from violence, abuse, exploitation, social exclusion and neglect
• All children – both girls as well as boys – have equal rights and opportunities for their personal development
• The dignity of children is respected
• Children grow up in peace and freedom (in their families, if possible), are socially integrated and participate in their community

Our projects in Africa:
• Ghana: Early and Forced Marriage
• Mali: quality education for children in rural areas; Underage domestic workers
• Togo: fundamental rights and future prospects; Children accused of witchcraft
• Benin: Protection from sexual violence and child trafficking; Resolving family conflicts
• Cameroon: Imprisoned children, fighting exploitation, recruitment & trafficking; Children active for peace & stability
• Cultural translation of children's rights

KiRA Consult: Our consulting department KiRA-Consult, was set up in 2009 because we wanted to share our expertise on implementing children’s rights with other civil society organisations. Our offer includes consulting in all stages of project preparation, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Particular focus is on financial, team and content management.

Horst Buchmann is the Founder and Chairman of Kinderrechte Afrika e. V. (KiRA).
