The Association of Non-Government Organizations, Cibaena, is dedicated to the unification and orientation of small organizations in the Cibao area of the Dominican Republic.
At the present time we are working on a medical project, in which we bring advisory services and medicines free of charge to the slums of our region. Another major task which we feel duty-bound to carry out is the establishment of a rehabilitation centre for drug-addicted women, called " Potters' House Christian Centre". We treat more than 30 women in the space of 6 months here. They are accommodated with us for one year for addiction treatment. Our experience with drug addicts has shown that those affected require about this amount of time to free themselves of addiction. Moreover, we train them in a technical occupation, eg they learn to work with a PC, or they learn English, nursing, cosmetics or follow other courses intended to make it easier to find a job once they leave the program.
The extent to which these Cibaena projects can be continued determines how far the poor of our region can be helped, so that they can be respected and have the same right to lead a dignified life as any other citizen of our country.
We can offer other net participants overnight facilities on request. In addition we can offer advice, provide an expert opinion, make presentations, provide up-to-date information and help with finding contacts in the area of drug addiction and human rights. Further support for other participants: we have a radio and TV programme in which we broadcast information on any topic which might be of interest to you, so that it can be made known to the whole population of the country.
