About us

The Peace Education Centre, established in 1997, is responsible for coordinating the activities of Peace Volunteers in Nigeria. The Centre is an affiliate of the Global Action to Prevent War in USA, International Peace Bureau in Geneva and a member of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA).

Its activities include organising programmes such as symposia, seminars, workshops, etc., aimed at educating members of the public about the attendant consequences of acts of violence.

The Centre also carries out peace awareness campaigns in secondary schools in order to give the students a sense of orientation as leaders of tomorrow. Drama sketches by the Echoes of Peace Troupe of the Centre bring home to our people the fact that there are no meaningful substitutes for peace. Bearing in mind that there are natural disasters such as earthquakes, epidemics, famines, etc., which man may not be able to control, the Centre's Peace Education programme is committed to preventing man-made disasters brought about by acts of violence and destruction in our society.

The Peace Education Centre also engages in crusades against the proliferation of arms such as light weapons and small arms as well as weapons of mass destruction. Bearing in mind that peace is an illusion without justice, we promote freedom and justice through dialogue, as violence is never a positive option in conflict resolution.
The Centre has been creating awareness about the dangers inherent in arms falling into the wrong hands.

The Peace Education Centre has been represented in many international conferences. The Centre has continuously created peace awareness in Nigeria through the media, by visiting schools and by communicating directly with people in government including President Olusegun Obasanjo, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dr. Makanju O. Vincent is the Director of the Peace Education Centre.

For other net participants we can offer overnight facilities. Also we can offer expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, deliver a lecture, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of peace and conflict resolution.
