Über uns

Golang Education Outreach was established in 2002 with a vision to uplift and enhance the educational journeys of underprivileged and vulnerable children. The Outreach is based in the Emthonjeni Community Centre in Honeydew, serving the people living in the informal settlement of Zandspruit. Golang is a non-profit organization which provides training and employment for adults and caters for the educational, social, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of children living in the Zandspruit Informal Settlement, Honeydew, in the Gauteng Province.

Golang Education Outreach aims to achieve its vision most effectively by involving ourselves in children´s lives, starting at an early age. We have succeeded in our mission to run a Preschool with 60 children from ages 3 – 6; an Aftercare Centre catering for 200 Primary School children; and a Youth Program for 45 High-Schoolers.

Projects:
• Pre-school: Our Pre-school was started in 2010. We have three qualified pre-school teachers and 60 pupils. We provide a top-quality pre-school educational experience. In this way, children can easily be guided into good quality primary schools close to Zandspruit. Some of our preschoolers have gone onto various primary schools, with great success records.
• Kidz Club (Aftercare Centre): We currently have 200 primary school children (Ages 6–13) in the Aftercare Centre, which opens five afternoons a week. The vision of Golang is to cater for the children in the community, offering them a place of safety, while assisting them with homework, tutoring, life-skills, sports, art & crafts, music, library, etc. Our goal with the day to day program is to have a balance between free play and a structured stimulating environment. We therefore start everyday at 13h30 with free play, then lunch, followed by our formal program, ending at 17h30.
• High School Youth Program: Our program has a focus on spiritual discipleship, teaching from God´s Word, and small group discussions around the teaching topic. Within the calendar year, there are outreach events, opportunities to serve the community, a weekend camp and other special events.
• Tutoring support: Golang has an educator for each grade who support the educational journeys of the children on a daily basis. We have volunteers who come every week to assist with extra maths and literacy tutoring. We encourage children to take out books from our library, while all of them receive tuition with the Reading Eggs and Maths Programs done on computer.
• Support for needy (sometimes child-headed) families: One of our team is allocated to look after the emotional and family needs of the children. Once a needy family is identified, they then receive monthly food hampers and visits. We also have monthly parenting workshops to support parents, as well as a `Parents Day´ to keep the parents and extended family as involved as possible. Home visits are done in the mornings to support the families of the most needy and vulnerable in our program. Children who are affected or infected by HIV receive special emotional care and counseling by our staff.
• Intensive Training of Staff: Our educators attend ongoing trainings sessions and workshops, equipping them to handle the children in a professional and caring manner. Our staff also live in the Zandspruit Informal Settlement.
• Sponsoring program: To financially assist children to enter into good quality schools as well as sponsoring them in with uniforms, stationery, breakfast and lunch.
