Qui sommes-nous

The association “Diabetes-Project The Gambia” was founded in 2007 and is recognized as a non-profit association. We are a group of people providing medical, material and financial support in everyday life to people with diabetes in the Gambia, Africa – in particular the affected people and students that we see in Dr. med. Alieu Gaye*s clinic and those we encounter on our travels there.

The purpose of the association is to promote the health of diabetics, especially in The Gambia (within Gambia in collaboration with the Gambian Diabetes Association), and to raise funds and goods through contributions and donations, as well as through fundraising events for this purpose.

Aims:
• The ultimate goal of the association is to help diabetics. The supply of insulin, sugar and hypertension drugs, blood glucose meters and test strips, especially the development and implementation of diabetic schooling, tailored to the local circumstances, must be ensured, together with Dr. med. Alieu Gaye. This not only requires the strength and motivation of the association, but also financial resources.
• Schooling for children gives them the chance of a life with a future, with employment. The association looks after children and adolescents with diabetes and wants to secure their education through donations.
• A further goal is to bring medical equipment (eg hospital beds, wheelchairs, Zimmer frames, crutches, sonography equipment, ECG equipment, sterilizers, dressings, etc.) to the Gambia, primarily for Dr. Alieu Gaye's clinic, but also to give things to needy families, where people are living with diabetes, to satisfy their everyday needs.

What we do
• People with type 1 diabetes: It is generally difficult for a person with type 1 or type 2 diabetes in Africa to get supplies of medicines, blood glucose meters and test strips. There is no health care system in The Gambia such as exists here in Germany. Together with Dr. Gaye, the “Diabetes Project” and other aid organisations provide insulin and diabetes supplements.
• Support of medical facilities: Dr. Alieu Gaye”s Pakala Clinic in Banjul; The Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul and Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital in Bundung
• Sponsorship for diabetics in Gambia
• The Novo Nordisk Academy supports the diabetes project: In high-quality further education courses, Novo Nordisk, based on decades of diabetes expertise, provides solutions to the challenges faced by healthcare professionals on a daily basis. The aim is to help professionals to provide their patients with the best possible care.
• Diabetic training program in Gambia
• Container: The focus of our work in The Gambia is on the care (therapy and diagnostics) of diabetics in the clinic of Dr. Alieu Gaye and his team, and the training of those affected. If we have the financial capability, we try to support needy families with diabetics with everyday material (beds, mattresses, dishes, sewing machines, furniture, etc.).

Roland Schindler is the President of Diabetes-Projekt The Gambia.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
