About us

Mission East, founded in 1991 in Denmark, is an international relief and development organisation, which works to help vulnerable populations, supporting communities´ capacities to organize and assist themselves, through activities ranging from disaster relief to development assistance. Mission East Deutschland e.V. was founded in 2013 in Berlin.

Our vision is to empower people and communities in crisis affected countries to lift themselves out of poverty and marginalization.

Mission East works in response to community needs, in Disaster Response and Rural Community Development. As well as direct implementation, Mission East works with and through local and international partners to enhance the relevance, impact and sustainability of our programmes.

Programmes:
• Afghanistan: With the help of the international community, through organisations like Mission East and other actors, vulnerable rural communities in these remote mountainous areas have been enabled to begin the process of transition to recovery and rehabilitation. Mission East works in the area of disaster relief, chronic food and livelihood insecurity and lack of access to clean water and adequate sanitation, exacerbated by poor knowledge and practice of hygiene, nutrition and natural resource management.
• Armenia: Medical aid supports the vulnerable in the shadow of conflict. Our actions mainly target people with disabilities and their families, children with special needs (educational, social, health), and people living in poverty in rural areas of the country. Support to people living with HIV/AIDS, as well working with those most at risk in order to slow the spread of the epidemic.
• Burma: Mission East responds to the needs of the Mara people, resident in the Chin state. The community established a boarding school to ensure its future through education of the children. From 2013 to 2016, Mission East provided help for the children in form of food supplies.
• Iraq: Help the displaced people in northern Iraq. Mission East provides emergency relief as well as aid for longer-term settlement purposes, including blankets, mattresses, kitchen utensils and hygiene kits. Thousands of desperate inhabitants of Western Mosul have received vital food supplies. In six community centres, children and youth get a chance to play and learn. And Mission East is now helping returnees earn a livelihood, e.g. by growing produce in greenhouses.
• North Korea: Mission East began its work in North Korea in 2011 in response to a series of dramatic weather incidents which damaged the previous harvest and led to cuts in government food rations for the population to only one-third of the daily energy requirements. Mission East is looking for opportunities to begin long-term projects which help to address some of the root-causes of food insecurity in North Korea. We also hope to bring our expertise in providing clean water and improving sanitation and hygiene conditions to the North Korean context.
• Nepal: From illiteracy to local politics. Some of the problems are: lack of access to safe water, poor sanitation facilities, poor hygiene practices and food insecurity. All of these made worse by the lack of infrastructure, the isolation and the very difficult geological conditions in the mountainous Himalaya range. Therefore Mission East alongside its local partners has undertaken a range of activities in order to address those fundamental needs.
• Tajikistan: Current programming focuses on the strengthening of civil society structures – both local organisations as well as grassroots initiatives like women´s groups or groups of parents of children with disabilities, to ensure self-management and sustainability. Support to small-scale agriculture, establishment of farmers´ cooperatives, enabling new income generation opportunities, construction of clean water systems, promotion of hygiene behaviour change, improving household energy efficiency and use of alternative energy sources.
