Sobre nosotros

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT) was established in 2010 when it was realised that there are many Child Cancer affected families that need help but are falling through the cracks.

Our Mission - Providing Practical, Emotional & Informational Support to Children with Cancer and their Families and Raising Public Awareness of Childhood Cancer Early Warning Signs across South Africa.

Our Goals - LFCT strives to relieve some of the heartache and difficulties faced by childhood cancer affected families by:
1.Providing support with a holistic approach, ensuring that individuals, families and communities are included.
2.Treating each child with cancer and his/her family as individuals respecting the uniqueness of each situation.
3.The preservation of individual dignity and pride.
4.Promoting National Childhood Cancer Awareness

Our Values - provide the foundation of our organisation and the means by which we achieve our goals:
• Empathy and Caring
• Respect for all
• Maintenance of strict confidentiality
• Preservation of each person’s dignity and individuality
• Integrity beyond reproach

LFCT provides Services in 3 core areas.
1.Hospital Ward Support
2.Individual Childhood Cancer Affected Family Support
3.Childhood Cancer Awareness

Hospital Ward Support
LFCT does outreaches in as many Paediatric Oncology Wards as often as possible, on Outpatient Clinic Days - reaching over 2 000 children with cancer plus their bedside care-givers.

LFCT responds to requests by Hospitals to assist with needs they might have in the Wards, in addition to our regular Hospital Ward Projects which include:

Bag of Hope - Many children are diagnosed far away from treatment centres, and within hours, a child and parent can end up in a different Province altogether, having had no chance to pack the bare basics needed for an extended hospital stay. The Child with Cancer as well as his/her bedside carer receives a bag of essentials:

Child’s Bag of Hope - packed specifically per age and gender - pyjamas, a blanket, 0-pH soap, Aqueous cream, toothbrush/ toothpaste, facecloth, educational toy, appropriate activity sets, soft toy, crisps, fruit juices, sweets.

Mother’s Bag of Hope - coffee, tea, sugar, rusks, cereal, Long-life milk, crackers, biscuits, 2-minute noodles, tinned meats, sandwich spreads, soap, facecloth, towel, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, sanitary pads, blanket.

Mother’s Day – On Mother’s Day LFCT spoils all the mothers who sit for months on end next to their Child’s bedside in a Paediatric Oncology Ward. Most of them live far from the hospital with no family to spoil them, so we do – with gifts & eats.

Share the Warmth Project – LFCT appeals for donations of warm winter shoes/clothing/accessories & soft blankets and distributes them to Children with Cancer in hospitals/day clinics, and the Mothers/Carers with those children. We also send winter goodies to our LFCT Families.

Birthday Bashes - A Child with Cancer’s next Birthday is not always guaranteed - LFCT Break the Rules Birthday Bash means it is EVERY child’s Birthday - each Child receives a Birthday Gift, cake, snacks, juices, balloons, noise makers, hats, masks and, where possible, a clown, balloon artist or other children’s entertainment is also provided.

Christmas Elf Project - Every Child with Cancer in a Paediatric Oncology Ward on the day, as well as all the Outpatient Clinic Patients, receive a gender/age-appropriate Christmas gift (average value R150- R200), a snack pack with crisps, chocolate bar, sweeties, fruit juice, a Santa hat and Christmas Cracker. LFCT also provides our Families at home with Christmas presents for the Child with Cancer as well as all siblings, food, basic needs & some nice little treats as everyone needs treats on Christmas.

Individual Childhood Cancer Affected Families - Many Children with Cancer experience extended stays in the hospital, for up to 2 years at a time, and the mother stays at the hospital with them. Added stress includes regular hospital visits for treatments/ check-ups, petrol/transport money specific dietary needs or clothing/equipment or medication.

Siblings suffer, there is often no food in the home/Families are evicted or lose their homes due to insufficient funds. LFCT prioritises providing groceries to individual Childhood Cancer Affected Families, but LFCT also provides many other forms of support.

Childhood Cancer Awareness - According to the South African National Tumour Registry, less than 33% of actual Childhood Cancer cases are diagnosed in South Africa every year. LFCT distribues Early Warning Signs of Childhood Cancer pamphlets & laminated and runs an annual September Awareness Campaign.
LFCT is a registered NPO with PBO Status and a Level 4 B-BEEE Contributor.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
