Hanover Friends of Togo has worked with its members in Togo since 1979, helping them by means of donations of money and in kind, with the aim of supporting and promoting self-initiative in all areas of life. The goal is to improve the living conditions of the poor in this poor country by constructing wells and health care facilities as well as supporting school education, the training of artisans and university education and by promoting self-initiative in agriculture. Another concern was the promotion of communal church music.
During the EXPO year 2014, our association was particularly in the limelight. Hanover Friends of Togo took over the organization of the stand at the world exhibition because the state of Togo could not make a decision.
In September 2014 the association celebrated its 35th anniversary and handed over the task of representation in Togo to Luc ATSU-DETE. Committee members travel to Togo every year.
Projects:
• The main town where we work is Sodo, about 150 km north-west of Lomé, a village with 6,000 inhabitants in its catchment area. One of our main facilities is the CMS SILOAH, which was renovated in 1982 as a first-aid facility and gradually expanded into a social-medical center, partly funded by the BMZ.
• In Sodo, we use our school fee funds to give children from poor families the opportunity to attend school. In the Protestant primary school the school fee is paid, in the state primary school the purchase of school materials and the materials for the school uniform are made easier. In addition, schoolbooks and teaching materials are subsidized through individual donations.
• An apprenticeship fund covers the costs of an apprenticeship and the release at the end of the apprenticeship. A committee is responsible for the expenses: COFOJESO. Commercial apprenticeships and training in manual trades are particularly encouraged.
• In university education, we work together with the association ATPOAD in Lomé. This supports needy pupils and above all students, as far as their financial resources allow. In addition, the association has been involved in the care of inmates of the prisons in Lomé and Tsevié for over 20 years.
