About us

Addis Hiwot Centre of the Blind (AHCB) was established in May, 2000. It is a legally registered Ethiopian Resident Charity organization by the Charities and Civil Societies Agency under proclamation number 0231/2019. Addis Hiwot Center of the Blind (AHCB) has the main objective of rehabilitating persons who lost their eye sight in post childhood or as adults.

Vision
To see the creation of conducive environment with equal social, political and economic opportunity for those persons who experienced visual impairment later in their life.

Mission
To strive to bring about positive changes in the lives of people who experienced visual impairment later in their life to adjust themselves to their situation, improve their self-concept, and strive towards transforming themselves in to productive and accepted members of the community.

Goals
• To find a way to make visually impaired persons more productive,
• Assist those late blind people to get out of poverty through education and other trainings and
• Conduct research on visual impairment and its causes in collaboration with other government and non-government organizations.

Services:
• Psychological support and counseling: Psychological support and counseling service helps the late visually impaired persons to accept and restore their way of life and then to be productive.
• Basic Braille literacy training: Basic Braille literacy training helps late visually impaired individuals to continue their interrupted education through the use of Braille as it helps them to read and write.
• Orientation and mobility training: Orientation and mobility training helps late visually impaired individuals to move along the white cane only.
• Independent living skills training: Independent living skills training includes food preparation, home management, child care, different handicraft skills trainings personal and family hygiene protection.
• ICT Training and tutorial service: ICT Training helps the late visually impaired individuals to access computer technology and use internet services for their day-to-day activities.
• Audio -Braille library service: This helps late visually impaired individuals to be effective in their education by using the library Braille and taking books in the form of cassettes and CDs.
• Braille embossing and printing: Braille embossing and printing service with disability (PWDs) in education sectors and base line assessment on the accessibility of health institutions for PWDs conducting different awareness raising workshops and trainings for late visually impaired people on the areas of disability, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and family planning.
• Vocational training and provision of business management training: Vocational training and provision of business management training -helps to build their economic and social relationship by sustain their livelihood and build their capacities.
