About us

Second Witnesses is involved in German remembrance and education. We see
our mission as being to make young people able to stand up to any kind of racism or
anti-Semitism. With our work we face up to our social democratic responsibility.
The personal life stories of holocaust survivors can transform our society. They help
young people to understand history. The stories of contemporary witnesses are not
to be silenced, rather we wish to enable and encourage as many young people as possible to
to pass the stories on as second witnesses.
Our vision
We believe in a world where people are not judged because of their religion, their appearance, or their origin, nor are they discriminated against because of their sexuality. We believe in an open and diverse society without anti-Semitism, which defends itself against all beginnings of misanthropic violence.
Our mission
Contemporary witness Elie Wiesel once said: "Anyone who listens to a witness today will become a witness himself."
Guided by this, Second Witnesses documents the life stories of survivors of the holocaust, in order to tell them to future generations. We act as witnesses of contemporary witnesses – i.e. as second witnesses. We report on these impressive and courageous stories when the eyewitnesses themselves can not tell their stories any more. In analogue and digital educational projects, exhibitions, events and publications we enable children and young people, in particular from the age of ten, to have personal access to the theme “ holocaust”. Second Witnesses encourages and enables young people to actively oppose anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination today. With the help of life stories, we raise awareness of anti-Semitism. We'll make a connection to their own living environment and encourage them to pass on the stories as second witnesses, to become active themselves and to assume social responsibility. With that we face the responsibility for democracy and diversity in our society.
Our concept
In our workshops, exhibitions and events we sensitize young people to anti-Semitism and racism. They are encouraged to read the life stories of contemporary witnesses as second witnesses - to pass them on, to become active themselves and to assume social responsibility.

Lena Hartmann is responsible for public relations & for fundraising at Second Witnesses.

On request, we can provide advice for other network participants, give a presentation,
provide specialist information and contacts in the field of our work.
