About us

Good Hope Foundation for Rural Development (GHFRD) is an indigenous non- governmental organization operating in the 4 Districts of Rwenzori region. It is currently registered by the Uganda NGO board as a Non-Governmental Organization, under the Non-Governmental Organization statute, reg. number S 5914 / 5232 of the year 2006.
GHFRD was formed in June 1996, though active work began in the year 2000 with an overall aim of promoting human rights and sustainable livelihood development by creating education awareness and support for advocacy strategies, relevant to specific needs to the rural communities in Kasese District, through involvement of these communities in identifying their social, economic and political situation in Kasese and the Rwenzori region in General.

Our mission is to promote the understanding and respect of human rights and good governance.

Focus areas:

Projects:
• Raising awareness on peaceful co-existence: GHFRD is implementing a project on increasing tangible benefits from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to communities neighboring the protected areas of Queen Elizabeth as well as raising awareness about peaceful co-existence between front line communities and the conservation area.
• Enhancing improved cook stove utilization in Bukonzo East constituency: GHFRD in partnership with WWF-Uganda is implementing a project on providing information about access to renewable clean energy technologies among the community members of our project coverage areas, and encouraging and supporting them to voluntarily plant trees to modify the climate. We distribute and link community members to renewable clean energy technology suppliers for them to practically embrace climate change adaptation. In this project, clean energy technologies like improved cook stoves and solar energy appliances have been promoted, emphasized and accessed among the rural areas in the project area. We work with organized community-based groups, institutions as well as business communities.
• Accelerating epidemic control in fort portal region: GHFRD in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Uganda (Baylor-Uganda) with funds from USAID is implementing this project using the “Bi-directional clinical, community and OVC referrals, linkages and service delivery implementation strategy. We serve a number of OVCs from households with HIV/AIDs back ground and other OVCs and we provide them with services including economic strengthening, food security and nutrition education, water, health and sanitation, psychosocial support and basic care and child protection and legal support through follow up.
• Community driven Approaches for Prevention of Violence against Children and Adolescents in Kasese District: The organization with support from children’s rights and violence prevention fund developed four Models of change which we are using to address parenting, income, safe school environment and adolescents out of schools. GHFRD adopted a parenting model called parenting for respectability (PFR) which is all about building relationships. GHFRD also uses village savings lending association (VSLA) methodology to improve household incomes. At school level, good hope adopted the model called the Journeys which addresses the good school environment that enables children to join school, remain in school and complete school. GHFRD also adopted the life skills model which build the skills of adolescents out of school to prevent violence against children and adolescents in the community.
