About us

Naturefund is a nature conservation organisation, whose aim is to buy land for nature and protect habitat for the great variety of species. Over just a few years Naturefund has already purchased meadows, forests, wetlands and a lake.

Naturefund´s big vision is to buy and protect 3.5 million square kilometres worldwide for nature. That is an area equal to 10 times the size of Germany, or 6 times the size of France or even 1 times the size of India, that Naturefund would like to protect for the great variety of species.

With an eye also on climate change, the conservation and network of habitats is vital for the survival of a number of species.

The policy of Naturefund will be realised through:

• the acquisition and preservation of natural habitats
• the establishment of conservation areas and national parks
• the implementation of reforestation measures in order to allow local sustainability
• information and public relations work to promote the preservation of nature and natural habitat
• the sharing of funds with other charitable organisations (whether national or international), whose goal is to support nature protection and/or sustainable development.

Our projects change regularly. In the summer of 2013, we had the following projects:

• Ancient Beech Forest: Naturefund has protected through several projects in 2013 about 80 ha-old beech forest on the Hohe Schrecke in Thuringia and wants to secure more space for nature. Now, another 20 hectares in the core zone, the wildest part of the forest, can be purchased for the nature. The Federal Office for nature conservation again supports the purchase of forest and gives 90% of the purchase price. It is one of the few undivided areas of forest in Germany, which has only been partially deforested since the Middle Ages. There is a forest, which experts claim is the closest to being a natural virgin forest. Wild cats and red deer find natural habitats here. The Nature Conservation Foundation David is the partner of Naturefund. They will be the long term owners and custodians of the area. After the purchase, the beech tree population will be recognised as a nature reserve forbidding any forestal and agricultural usage of the land, and will therefor become a part of the 2,000 hectares of wilderness area.

• Planting trees: Central America was previously covered in rainforest, however tree-logging has largely destroyed it, leaving the much-reduced areas of forest that remain today. The last large rainforest in Central America is located in southeast Honduras, though even in protected areas the number of trees being felled is steadily increasing. In the Patuca National Park, Naturefund together with the Asociación Patuca is creating tree nurseries and planting thousands of trees.

Since the beginning we have secured and rehabilitated numerous areas for nature. Here is the overview: Secured projects - Link: http://www.naturefund.de/projekte/land_schuetzen/geschuetztes_land.html
