About us

We, a small group of like-minded people, founded the non-profit association Together in the Gambia on January 31st, 2018.

The purpose of the association in Gambia is development cooperation by helping people to help themselves in improving living conditions with a focus on health care, school and vocational training and village development.

All activities in Gambia are decided, planned and carried out together with the village authorities.

Our activities and projects:
• School education: In many cases, parents are unable to equip their children with notebooks and pencils. In addition to the lack of space and the extremely high number of students per class, the lack of learning material also reduces the effectiveness of the teaching. We are trying to counteract this in elementary schools. We supply the Technical Secondary School with "special" material such as compass boxes, set squares and rulers as well as pens. We received a donation of 21 laptops for IT classes, which is crucial for orderly and effective classes during the constant power cuts.
• Vocational training: Our vision is to build a centre that enables primary school leavers to receive vocational training, initially in basic trades such as bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry, gardening, sewing and similar. This would give the children a chance to earn a living and later to provide for a family. This would give them prospects for the future in the Gambia and they would not have to flee to seek a supposedly better life. Because those who make this difficult, risky flight are mainly young men, who the country urgently needs for the further development of the country.
• Health promotion: We are active in health education for the villagers, in first aid training and supply of first aid material and in the introduction of dental hygiene. In addition, we supply dispensaries and hospitals with material for wound care (bandages). Educational campaigns have begun, with our support. Gambian specialists have informed the villagers about common diseases (e.g. malaria and other communicable diseases), hygiene, family planning, healthy nutrition and first aid. Advice and financial support are needed here. The correct use of medicines such as painkillers and antibiotics, which are freely available without a prescription, must also be taught.
• Village development: support for the kindergarten, financial support for setting up hand washing stations, food aid in times of Corona, support for setting up garden projects, etc.
