About us

Earthlife Africa Johannesburg is a non-profit organisation, founded in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1988, that seeks a better life for all people without exploiting other people or degrading their environment. We want to encourage and support individuals, businesses and industries to reduce pollution, minimise waste and protect our natural resources.

We are an environmental justice organisation. We focus on sustainable energy, remediation of mining waste, empowerment of women and the youth in sustainable projects and the remediation of pollution in catchments and rivers. We have a prime focus currently in opposing nuclear power

Earthlife has a number of campaigns covering a broad spectrum of topics.
• Aninal Action: Vivisection, factory farming, the promotion of vegetarianism, hunting, culling and conservation, the sterilisation of companion animals, the use and abuse of animals in circuses and zoos
• Biodiversity & Toxics: The toxics campaign is directed at the poisoning of the planet and the individual – it is increasing and threatening all life forms.
• Renewable Energy: The issues of Renewable Energy and Climate Change are dealt with by the Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Project of Earthlife Africa Johannesburg. The Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Project seek a just transition to renewable energy and a low-carbon economy. The SECCP works to promote local and global environmental and social justice on sustainable energy and climate change issues, by changing policies and behaviour through building the awareness and capacity of civil society and government, to achieve an equitable future with respect for all.
• Nuclear Energy: Earthlife Africa Jhb has a very strong and clear position regarding nuclear energy. We do not believe that South Africa should build any more nuclear plants (PMBRs or light-water reactors). Nuclear power is neither safe nor economically viable. Furthermore, it inflicts many, many future generations with the burden of radioactive waste.
• Zero Waste:
• Acid mine drainage: Acid mine drainage is the flow, or seepage, of polluted water from old mining areas. Depending on the area, the water may contain toxic heavy metals and radioactive particles. These are dangerous for people´s health, as well as plants and animals. Fracking:
• Climate Change:
