About us

The Ukunda Aid. association was founded in 2003 to promote schooling for poor children in Kenya.
The organization emerged from a small, private initiative that started organizing its first activities to help the town of Ukunda in 2002. Ukunda is a melting pot of different tribes and cultures, a busy place on the south coast of Kenya - at Diani Beach - approx. 30 km south of Mombasa (population approx. 60,000).

What we do
• The association primarily supports the schooling of poor children. In the meantime, many of the sponsored children have successfully completed school and are in professional life - some have even made the leap to colleges and universities.
• As part of other association projects, a German-Kenyan team of doctors held “medical days” free of charge in various villages and schools for several years. In the meantime, however, there has been a move towards promoting individual hospital wards in terms of their structure and operation so that patients can be cared for continuously throughout the year.
• The organization now also supports some disadvantaged villages around Ukunda. The projects include building and repairing wells, supporting small hospital wards, school renovations, building new schools and kindergartens, setting up an IT centre and much more.

Since it is a purely private initiative, no donations are lost on administration, etc. Every donation goes directly to the poor in Kenya.

The organization of the association on site:
Alice Ngelech, a former teacher who knows best about the problems of the poor and needy
Caro Mengich, an experienced employee who previously worked for non-governmental organizations, specifically in hunger relief.

Recent projects:
• Construction of an IT centre at the Diani Baptist Academy: The aim of this measure is to improve the professional opportunities of poor young people in the Ukunda area. A community training centre is being built and fully equipped for these young people with the support of the Bavarian State Chancellery. From 2019, the young people will be taught computer and internet technology in this centre.
• Construction of a kindergarten in the village of Mwakilemba in the Taita Hills, as well as the construction of a solar-powered well
• School renovation in Mteza
• Sponsorships: By arranging sponsorships, the Ukunda Aid association supports children from the poorest classes when they attend school. Since 2019 the association has switched only to arranging sponsorships with school lunch included, as hungry children are bad learners.

Anneliese Jacquet is the chairwoman of Ukunda Aid
