Über uns

Action for Environmental Sustainability (AfES) was established in February 2007 and is registered by The NGO Board of Malawi, The Council for Non-Governmental organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA) and the government of Malawi as a non-governmental organization under the trustees Incorporation act. AfES has its main office in Blantyre, southern region of Malawi and sub offices in the central and northern region of Malawi where it is implementing its initiatives.

Mission
To address the most critical root causes of poverty and environmental degradation in communities.

Vision
To reduce extreme poverty and achieve sustainable environment that provides improved living standards for everyone.

Objectives
• To build partnership and networks with individuals, organizations and other stakeholders in order to strengthen capacity of the communities as they work towards poverty reduction, natural resources and biodiversity conservation within and outside key biodiversity areas,
• To implement activities that address complex factors that causes community poverty and enhances human development,
• To promote sustainable agriculture and food security,
• To promote water, sanitation and hygiene in communities.

Projects and activities:
Natural Resources management and Biodiversity Conservation:
• Source of non-timber products eg mushrooms, edible fruits, thatch grass/fodder, art and craft materials,
• Promoting improved forestry governance through capacity building of the forest dependent communities and formulation of management plans,
• Water catchment and wetland management,
• Tree planting, nursery establishment, woodlot establishment and regenerative agriculture,
• Ecological/Biodiversity surveys and community awareness campaigns,

Climate change resilience and adaptation:
• Sustainable energy (Solar energy, Bio-gas energy, Methanol and Ethanol as a cooking fuel),
• Land scape management, development & implementation of gender sensitive adaptation plans,
• Conservation agriculture/permaculture,
• Carbon emission reduction projects,
• Awareness raising,
• Alternative livelihood (promoting income generating activities such as bee keeping, VS&L, Business management, production and economic use of eco stoves)

Food security:
• Agroforestry, permaculture, conservation agriculture (gully reclamation, river bank rehabilitation, composting)
• Ridge alignment and stabilization with vetiver grass,
• Contour farming
• Construction of check dams
• Small scale irrigation (solar pump irrigation system)
• Water harvesting, fish farming/aquaculture and irrigation
• Alternative livelihood (promoting income generating activities such as bee keeping, VS&L, Business management, production and economic use of eco stoves)

WASH:
• Clean drinking water supply (boreholes),
• anitation and hygiene promotion,
• School sanitation

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
