The Kevin Rohan Memorial Eco Foundation (KRMEF) commemorates the life of Kevin Rohan Gurung, who passed away on December 21st, 2008.
The principles at the heart of KRMEF are centered around their vision for Kevin to become a holistic, biodynamic, and socially responsible individual. The projects at KRMEF are meant to provide others the opportunities that Kevin was never able to have, and has inspired us to launch the foundation as a center for teaching others.
Though our various work in biodynamic agricultural methods, early childhood education, medical services and community development, we aim to be of service to Nepal’s neediest communities.
By cooperating with villagers and sharing our support, we can bring about the positive and sustainable changes so needed in Nepal. Villagers can learn to develop their own eco-friendly practices that benefit themselves and their family so they may be the change in their own communities as well.
Our goal is to create and implement eco-friendly programs designed to promote and encourage sustainable community development in order to influence and nurture a fundamental kinship with the environment in our local community and throughout Nepal as a whole.

Our Mission
To foster health and well-being in Nepal’s most impoverished communities by encouraging sustainable change through environmentally friendly programs. We act as an education center for local people, allowing them opportunities to build productivity, cooperation and wellness for their own communities, launching Nepal into a future where sustainable, eco-friendly living is possible.

Our programs
- Women´s Empowerment - Mahila Shakti Women's Workshop: "Mahila Shakti” means “women’s power” in the Nepali language. The handicrafts produced in our workshop are made by local women who are impoverished or come from difficult backgrounds. Some have suffered from leprosy and still live with the stigma associated with the disease, making it difficult to find employment.
- Environmental Initiatives: Biodynamic Farming - It is KRMEF’s mission to bring this environmentally sustainable, effective farming method to the local community and throughout Nepal. Villagers from remote areas can attend seminars at the foundation to learn about biodynamic farming practices, which they can then bring back to their own communities; Bio Briquettes - KRMEF is active in manufacturing bio briquettes, a high energy organic fuel source. Our bio-briquettes are made on-site from a mixture of sawdust, shredded waste paper and cow dung. We employ locals and those affected by leprosy to mix the paper with sawdust, which is therapeutic and promotes blood circulation in their hands and feet. Cow dung is then added to the mixture, made into briquettes using a special hand-press, and dried. The resulting biofuel is light, easily transportable, cost effective and eco-friendly; Bio Gas - We are engaged in the production of biogas, a renewable methane gas produced from the fermentation of cow manure and urine. The waste is placed into an anaerobic digestion tank where it is mixed into a slurry. Gas is released and piped into an underground holding tank where it can then be used as fuel for gas stoves. The leftover slurry by-product is used both as a fertilizer for our biodynamic farm as well as a mulch for preserving soil in the dry season; Solar Energy - KRMEF is active in providing free workshops throughout Nepal to teach villagers about the use and production of eco-friendly energies so they may have the opportunity to develop their own alternative cooking fuel from locally sourced materials. We seek to bring these methods into full sustainability and look forward to a future where all have access to renewable energy sources that preserve our healthy green earth; Natural Buildings - We developed our eco-building method in 2010 as a solution to Nepal’s outdated and environmentally-unfriendly traditional architecture. Our structures have a bamboo frame, thatched roof, recycled car tire base and walls made from plaster using shredded recycled paper, clay, sand, straw, and cow manure. Glass bottles, which would otherwise be disposed of in the streets, are recycled to serve as bricks which are both strong and decorative. As a result, these eco-buildings are much cheaper to construct, and follow a flexible structural system which will sway, but is less likely to crumble during an earthquake.
- Post Disaster Recovery: Natural, Earthquake-Resistant Buildings
- Medical Clinic: KRMEF has created this program to serve the health needs of the less fortunate. We have employed a full-time nurse and a Physician that comes in once a week. We are in the process of securing funding for a Pediatrician and Gynecologist to work once a week as well. During its years of operation, the clinic has served as a great developmental tool for the community. All the patients are provided with a medical file in return for a very small fee. The foundation has provided health camps and informative briefs in Kathmandu and the village of Dhading. It has reached over 1,000 people with health tests, treatment, and healthy living expositions. Also the clinic has begun to offer pathogenic and blood services, it hopes to expand to provide lab services on site.
- Education: Ankuran Kindergarten and School - The “Ankuran,” a Nepali word for ‘sprouting seed’, is serving local students from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade. Ankuran wants to give our children an education that develops the heart, hand and mind. Through practical, hands-on activities and learning through play, each student’s natural talents are nurtured. Respect and appreciation of nature is celebrated in the decor, in the variety of nature-based activities and in free play outdoors in our natural bamboo playground. We offer scholarships to families who are unable to pay our monthly tuition fee.
- Leela's Eco Cafe: Launched in 2015, Leela’s Eco Cafe is located on the top floor of a beautiful bottle building and boasts charming farm and mountain views. Our authentic and affordable Nepali cuisine is sourced from our biodynamic farm. We utilize eco-friendly cooking methods and employ local chefs and staff. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner to locals, volunteers, and visitors, and lunch for our school children
