Act for Change (AfC) is a youth-led NGO, registered in 2011, from Ga-Mashie (James Town), Accra, Ghana which uses forum/interactive and popular theatre as well as other participatory methods to advocate social issues that affect communities.

Our vision is to implement sustainable programmes where young people are able to access information and opportunities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Our mission is to effect behaviour change and improve the quality of life’s using forum theatre, workshops and youth exchange programmes to communicate social developments concern.

Objectives
• To empower young people through human rights training using informal education and training methodologies to develop their self-esteem, acquire vocational and life skills to help them make informed choices on issues that affect them and the community.
• To use interactive theatre to bring about behaviour change, thereby reducing anti-social and criminal behaviour, domestic violence and sexual abuse.
• To promote the sexual and reproductive health rights of all marginalised and disadvantaged people in the community.
• To build the capacity of the organisation (franchise) and other identifiable groups through regular trainings and skills sharing workshops.

Programmes:
• Community Theatre: We engage with youth groups, churches, fun clubs and women´s groups etc. During these Community Theatre Performances, a unique tool called ‘touch-tag’ is then used to pinpoint critical moments at the end of each scene and seek alternative solutions by inviting the audience (spec-actors) to find alternative ways of solving issues, other than resorting to negative means.
• Rural Exchange: The Rural Exchange programme provides opportunity for our volunteers (mainly in Accra) to visit and spend time with young people in rural areas across the country. During the exchange programme, Act for Change will train local youth on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights topics, perform at the schools, churches, youth groups, organize film screening and make donations to the community. The main aim is to share our work and contribute to solving challenges facing young people in rural areas.
• Forum Train: Forum Train is designed to give the people of the Ga-Mashie community the opportunity to engage directly with policy makers as well as those involved in implementing and supporting policies which directly affect the community. The idea is to empower them by giving them a voice in the decision making implementation processes.
• Training and Workshops: Behaviour Change Workshop: Interactive workshops which create a friendly, comfortable atmosphere and serve as a vehicle through which participants reflect on their behaviour in the community so as to bring about positive lifestyle changes. This will help reduce HIV and AIDS, unsafe abortion, teenage pregnancy, criminal and anti-social behaviour and human rights abuse among women, young people and children.
• James Town Arts Festival: James Town Arts Festival addresses these twin issues, of unemployment and industry marginalisation, by celebrating our vibrant and innovative creative community. By prioritising James Town-based artists and artisans, we have created a festival that is not only in James Town, but of James Town.

Projects:
• Direct Aid Project (DAP): The goal of the project is to improve the lives of young people in James Town, through reducing the incidents of gender-based violence and unplanned pregnancy and encouraging income generation through the arts. Using Theatre for a Change’s acclaimed ‘interactive theatre’ program, workshops explore sexual and reproductive health, gender rights and more.
• Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI): It seeks to use interactive theatre as a tool to create awareness on the adverse effects of child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) on the girls, youth and whole community.
• Setting Sails for Partner-Ships: The aim is to bring young people from Ghana and Germany together to share knowledge and experience on the Sustainable Development Goals with special emphasis on Goal 17, Partnerships for the goals.
