About us
San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace (SLOMFP), founded in 1969, is a non-profit organization concerned with the local dangers involving the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, and with the dangers of nuclear power, weapons and waste on national and global levels. Additionally, Mothers for Peace concerns itself with issues of peace, social justice and a safe environment
Specifically, Mothers for Peace has been involved in litigation and public hearings involving the following issues: initial and subsequent licenses, seismic safety, County Emergency Response Plan, high level radioactive waste storage, rate structure and deregulation, degradation of coastal waters, plant security.

• License Renewal: Mothers for Peace has challenged this license extension.
• Radioactive Waste: High level radioactive waste is stored at Diablo Canyon in pools and in dry casks. Mothers for Peace is currently in litigation regarding the dry cask storage facility and the potential impact of terrorism on the surrounding environment.
• Security & Terrorism: Mothers for Peace is on the home stretch of the protracted litigation in our second challenge of the Nuclear Regulatory commission before the Ninth circuit Court.
• Environmental Concerns: Mothers for Peace is concerned about the contamination of the land, air, and marine environments due to routine operation and in the event of a catastrophic accident at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.
• Plant Safety
• Economics: San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace (SLOMFP) represented by attorney Diane Curran of Washington, D.C., filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to oppose the license renewal of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.
• Sustainable Energy: Civilization without nuclear power is possible. Wind, solar, bioenergy, and other sustainable sources of energy – coupled with energy efficiency and conservation – can meet our electricity needs. They are less expensive, clean, and readily available.
• Scholarship: Mothers for Peace awards yearly scholarships to high school seniors and college students whose career plans and community work demonstrate serious commitment to caring for the Earth or promoting world peace.
