Hope for Vulnerable Children Association (HOVUCA) is a grass root level Non-Profit organisation, founded in 2012 and based in Cameroon. HOVUCA aims to give hope to underprivileged children.
Our vision is to create an environment where vulnerable children especially in the rural communities will have a right to protection, survival, development and have a voice.
Our mission is to use research, education, advocacy and community partnerships to enhance child protection systems and facilitate vulnerable children’s access to basic facilities while breaking barriers for the girl child to enable them have equal rights.
Our objectives
• Increase access to children’s basic and developmental rights
• Advocate for the rights of the children and empower girls in general and adolescent girls in particular to uphold their rights/make concrete decisions on reproduction, sexuality, HIV/AIDS and drug abuse.
• Improve the health of HIV/AIDS infected children and other vulnerable children.
• Care and support street/neglected/abandoned children with the basic non-food and food items and shelter.
• Increase awareness among children and community members on the rights of the child
• Empower women to care and support vulnerable children with emotional and physical needs.
• Network and share information with development actors locally, nationally and internationally and encourage them to help vulnerable children prosper.
Projects:
• Health: We focus on HIV/AIDS. What we do: Awareness and sensitization of the public on: HIV prevention; treatment centers; availability of free counseling and testing; managing infections; HIV screening campaigns; Research and advocacy for policy and behavior change; Counseling and referral for testing and treatment; we fight stigma and discrimination; Capacity building
• Nutrition: We support children in this condition with nutritional food parcels to help change their growth, and we orientate parents/caregivers on nutritive food to give children that will make them grow normally.
• Education - Formal Education and Vocational Training: What we do: School fees and basic schools needs support; Prize award to meritorious pupils to encourage them and others to study hard; Health education campaigns in schools; Renovating of shattered school buildings; Awareness raising.
• Children’s Rights Advocacy: At HOVUCA, we believe advocacy: provides a voice and protects the basic rights of vulnerable people; prevents escalation through early intervention; improves communication between clients and service providers; decreases social isolation and vulnerability; facilitates participation and inclusive problem solving; builds confidence to enable people to speak up for themselves and be in control of their lives and supports people to access community care services.
• Strong Girls Corner: We aim to address the critical information needs/rights of girls especially adolescent girls on reproduction, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, drug consumption in conformity with the relevant national policy. Our focus: Adolescent girls SRHR/menstrual health management (MHM); Girls protection rights- GBV; Girls rights to healthcare and education; Gender equality for girls and cultural barriers.
• Child Protection: Protection against Violence; Protection against Exploitation; Integration and Rehabilitation; Birth Registration
• Livelihoods: Business support and agriculture/farming support
• Humanitarian work: Distribution of dignity kits to young women and adolescent girls; Psycho-social support/counseling to survivors of sexual violence; Livelihood skill for unaccompanied adolescents and working towards reintegration; Awareness raising on child protection and SGBV prevention; Ongoing negotiations for families for the homeless
• WASH projects: We carry out community awareness/sensitization sessions on the effects of poor sanitation infrastructure and poor hygiene management and build their capacities on best practices for water, sanitation and hygiene management; We carry out menstrual health management and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (MHM/WASH) activities to increase awareness and good practices for menstrual hygiene management for women and girls; We construct wells to provide safe drinking water to children in vulnerable communities; We construct toilets in schools and hand wash spaces; We provide dignity kits (pads, pants, buckets and soap) to children especially adolescent girls who are facing hardships to support their dignity and hygiene.
• Sports and Leisure: Providing a fun and safe environment for our vulnerable children to play and be active, we are empowering them and building in them self esteem, positive attitudes and respect, team spirit and leadership skills.
