About us

Friends of Literacy Tanzania (FLT) is a non- profit making organization based in Lushoto District, Tanga, Tanzania. The Organization aims at tackling the adverse challenges of education within our communities in different parts of Tanzania. Friends of Literacy Tanzania is a project of the Tanzania Indigenous Environmental Management Organization

Our Mission:
Serving the society at a large in minimizing the level of illiteracy in Children by addressing and pioneering the book reading tradition to children from the age of 3 years to 12 years old.

Vision:
The organization aspires to end the challenges of illiteracy to children by meeting the goals set by the Tanzanian government which states “one book one child”by the year 2025.

Project and programs:
Our recently most important and newest project is the introduction of Lushoto district's first and only public library. The library is our main tool for running and starting the following programs:
• The after school book clubs are book reading clubs which have been established in different schools in order to attract the students to participate in book reading programs, i.e. book discussions, read a book ride a bike, book camps etc.
• The after school English club is aiming to improve writing and speaking skills of students, helping them to face the challenges of completing their scholar exams.
• The poetry club aims at improving the writing and reciting skills of the children through different poetry session.
• The art, sports and games program aims to create a fun access to education.
• The book camps combine staying in the middle of the beautiful nature of the Usambara Mountains with learning from books about nature and environment. We want to introduce a culture of camping to teach children the appreciation of their natural surroundings.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
