About us

Vista Hermosa Farm Project is a not for profit organization, formed to create an educational model for sustainable, permaculture mini-farming. A variety of other positive environmental and permaculture methods and experiments will also be part of our program. The farm is set in Costa Rica in a beautiful environment, surrounded by spectacular nature and views.

The project:
Our program is designed to create a working model of a bio-intensive, organic, sustainable (permaculture) farm and to use this model, in conjunction with traditional teaching methods (lectures, films, literature) as a hands on learning experience.
Volunteers/students will learn how to grow a larger quanties of food per square meter (enough to feed a typical family on an average size suburban lot). Using these methods, we will build our own high quality soil, maintain the soil and nutrients, all while maintaining a low carbon impact on the environment.
Our program will also introduce methods to develop self sustained, environmentally sound living. Our farm will implement these methods and our goal is that it will not only feed a group of volunteers, workers and directors, but will also provide additional fresh organic produce to the local community over time. We will also incorporate other projects such as food forests, reforestation, soil erosion prevention, community development, community and environment friendly entrepreneurship and more.
The program includes:
• Composting and Organic Soil amendment methods to build soil and keep it fertile and viable.
• Creation and preparation of different types of growing beds to accommodate landscaping and drainage.
• Irrigation and mulching strategies that use less water to effectively provide for crops.
• Off the grid methods of sustainable living.
• Proper seed storage, germination and planting
• Maintenance and harvesting.
• Soil erosion prevention methods.
• Food preservation for limited growing time climates.
• Creating long term, sustainable food forests.
• Reforestation of cleared lands.
• Environment and community friendly small business development (entrepreneurship).
• Local community outreach to help area people learn to grow their own food and work together.

All of these concepts will be discussed, various films and discussions will be presented and depending upon which phases of the project you are participating in, many techniques will be practiced. We will introduce the importance of growing your own healthy food (for yourself, your family and your community) to provide better nutrition using environmentally sustainable and economically practical methods. At times, we will be sending volunteers around the local community to help people with limited resources learn to grow their own food as well. The program will be focused on mostly growing plant foods, but we will be maintaining a group of chickens for eggs and compost materials.

For other net participants we can offer overnight facilities, Also we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
