About us

The Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center (RAREC) is a wildlife rescue located near Iquitos, Peru. Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate threatened specimens of Amazonian wildlife, as well as to provide community education, and to further scientific knowledge that will help us preserve the Amazon Rainforest
RAREC started operations in 2011. We operate as a fully licensed rescue center, and we are registered as a non-profit institution. Our programs are funded with the financial support from our partners in conservation, as well as donations from people with a keen interest in the preservation of Amazonia, all over the world.

Our work:
Rescue
• RAREC is primarily a wildlife rescue center. From our base of operations in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, we rescue wild animals in danger, to bring them to our facility for treatment, as we prepare them for their return to the wild.
• RAREC is a fully licensed and authorized rescue and rehabilitation center. We coordinate our efforts with the Peruvian Environmental Police, and our long standing cooperation agreement has been recognized by the Peruvian Government.
• Our wildlife rescue team stands ready to perform any type of rescue, under any conditions. When we receive notice from the Police about an animal in need of assistance, we dispatch veterinarians, biologists, and assistants as part of our rescue team. We then secure transport of the animal back to our facility, for further examination and medical treatment.
Education
• Our wildlife rescue programs are complemented with parallel programs focused on education and awareness. Education is the key to creating a lasting change, and through awareness, we bring attention to the plight of the Rainforest.
• RAREC's community education programs seek to educate the communities about the need to preserve the Rainforest, instead of destroying it. Our programs for adults include training in sustainable sources of income. We seek to turn poachers into fish farmers, and we seek to replace slash-and-burn farming practices with techniques for growing ecologically friendly crops with a high market demand.
• Our programs for kids are aimed to teach the children about the value and importance of the place where they live -- the Rainforest.
• RAREC also organizes awareness campaigns aimed to curb damaging environmental practices. A great number of people in the towns and cities in the Amazon keep wild pets, or consume meat from poached animals. Our team brings the message of conservation to the streets, to inform the people that these practices are illegal and wrong, and they should be stopped.
• Finally, RAREC seeks to reach out to the international community via social media, in order to inform the world about the need to preserve the Amazon.
• RAREC's Veterinary Courses are designed to provide students in biology and veterinary sciences with the practical knowledge and experience that they will need, to become conservationists in a rapidly changing world. A multi-layered approach to training that encompasses the many diverse and unique aspects of conservation programs focused in this extremely sensitive region of our planet.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
