About us

Tingathe Development Forum (TIDEF), established in 2012, is a Malawian community based Non-Governmental Organization that exists to improve the community livelihoods and natural resources sustainability in Nkhotakota District, Malawi.

Mission
We exist to promote sustainable community development initiatives through biodiversity conservation, livelihood support, water and sanitation and building strategic partnerships. We work with local and indigenous communities in Nkhotakota District, Malawi.

Our Approach
We employ a right-based approach in our development and conservation work with local communities and other stakeholders. In addition, we emphasise on learning-by-doing, and make use of other participatory methods such as: training, campaigns, extension, workshops, field visits, village meetings, exchange visits, projects and strategic planning.

One of our key strategies is the enhancement of local community involvement and participation in sustainable management of natural resources in and around protected areas and reinforce grassroots environmental protection efforts.

Activities
• We do this through conservation education, policy dissemination, anti-poaching campaigns and the provision of viable alternatives to hunting and trading in bush meat to local communities.
• We integrate nature protection & sustainable development strategies that encompass food security, livelihood improvement and sustainable natural resource management.
• We work in close collaboration with local state services, NGOs, conservation cooperatives & Common Initiative Groups (CIGs) to increase public awareness on environmental issues, train community members on sustainable agricultural practices and support local people engage in alternative livelihood options such as goat farming, poultry farming, organic food production via agroforestry, composting and other adaptive systems in the face of climate change.
