About us

Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that supports and connects communities across Africa through research, education, enterprise development and growing awareness about ocean conservation and plastic pollution. We also build networks for sharing information and support focused on waste management. Through our events and projects, the African Marine Waste Network, Hope Spots and Marine Education, we are bringing like-minded and passionate people together, locally and internationally, to manage the issues of plastic waste in Africa.
Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) is a science-based organisation that works to protect Africa’s marine resources for the benefit of all who live on the continent.

Our Vision
Clean, healthy, sustainable seas and flourishing communities living alongside them.

Our Mission
To grow a network of stakeholders in the conservation and waste-management sectors to facilitate best practices around conservation of our seas, and the management of the waste that flows into them.

Projects:
SST protects Africa’s oceans through education on plastic waste, conservation and fostering enterprise development
• African Marine Waste Network (AMWN): Our AMWN works to develop better waste-management strategies in Africa and foster enterprise development. AMWN focuses on preventing marine pollution in Africa at its source, on land. It does this by building networks between government, industry and civil society, and fostering enterprise development; it’s an active platform for collaboration, and resource- and knowledge-sharing within countries and across borders in Africa.
• Hope Spots: These are marine areas of ecological and biodiversity significance around the world. The Hope Spot movement was started by world-renowned oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle to unite global efforts to protect the sea by raising public awareness, access and support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas. There are six Hope Spots in South Africa.
• Marine Education: Our programmes teach people about the coastal ecosystem and the effects of plastic pollution. SST has produced a number of educational films, as well as a book, which is used to raise funds. We also host photo walks along the rocky shores of Kenton-on-Sea.
