About us

A group of concerned Kenyans established the Mount Kenya Trust following a detailed 1999 report that shocked the nation by concluding that "Mount Kenya´s forests are under extreme threat from human induced illegal activities such as extensive poaching of wildlife, devastating logging of indigenous tree species, charcoal production, over-grazing, and large scale growing of marijuana."

The Mount Kenya Trust was established to help preserve and protect this important heritage.

The Mount Kenya Trust works closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Forest Department to ensure that its projects address the issues of highest priority.

Our mission is:
• To concentrate preservation efforts at the field level for maximum impact.
• To fence critical forest areas in order to minimize human-wildlife conflict.
• To support existing Government and Law Enforcement agencies and assist them in stemming illegal activities that threaten Mount Kenya´s ecosystem.
• To initiate reafforestation programs and establish nurseries for indigenous trees.
• To develop and implement local education and research programs.

Projects
• Elephant Corridor Project: The newly complete elephant corridor project reopens the historical elephant access route between the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve and the Mount Kenya National Reserve.
• Elephant Fencing Project: Poverty alleviation is vital for Mt. Kenya´s protection. Fencing is a priority in the fight against food security issues created by human - wildlife conflict in the Mt. Kenya region.
• Anti-poaching Projects: The Joint Wildlife Protection team; the Marania Wildlife Guards
• Tree-Planting Projects: The Trust is reforesting degraded areas of the Mount Kenya forest and encouraging tree planting on farms surrounding the Mount Kenya National Reserve.
• Education: Education initiatives and printing and distributing educational materials; Topics such as identifying tree species and wildlife, water preservation, the benefits of elephant fencing and the importance of practising conservation and energy saving techniques are introduced to all children whose futures will depend on such issues.
• Mountain Bike Challenge: The 10 to 4 Mountain Bike challenge is a unique fund-raising event for conservation and community projects in the Mount Kenya region.
