About us

Start Somewhere is a non-profit limited organization from Munich with eight years of experience in development cooperation in one of the largest slums in Africa: Kibera, Nairobi (Kenya).

The vision of Start Somewhere is the sustainable improvement of living conditions in the slums of this world.

In concrete terms, Start Somewhere is developing a flexible, reusable, cost-effective and fireproof construction system for buildings in slums. The resulting hollow concrete blocks can be assembled and disassembled by hand as a modular, mortarless plug-in system. For the first time, any angle can also be realised steplessly in the floor plan.

In this way, the first school building is to be constructed as a pilot project in Kibera by 2020. Start Somewhere wants to enable the slum residents to produce the hollow concrete blocks themselves in a factory on site and thus erect better buildings in the slum. Jobs and a local construction industry are created to keep the added value in the slum.

As a non-profit organization, Start Somewhere supports two schools in the Kibera slum with currently over 800 children through donations. This includes two daily meals in the school, medical care and equipment for the schools.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field: social housing in development countries.

You always have to start somewhere. Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya
Our vision: jobs and better living conditions in Kibera and the slums worldwide
Since 2011 we have been supporting schools in Kibera
Now we want to facilitate the slums to improve their housing conditions from the inside
The tool: A new concrete block with little material usage
little material usage, deconstructable, freedom to design
Our next step: A local workshop in Kibera to produce concrete blocks
to build a new school for Kibera Slum
