About us
Many people in Hamburg, Germany, are in material need and lack very practical, everyday things to improve their lives. Whether it's furniture for the first home after homelessness or satchels for the children of a refugee family, a bike, a PC or household effects – often just few things make life easier.
Many people receive support from nonprofit organizations. These often have to work with very tight budgets. Many things that could facilitate and improve the work are often not financeable, e.g. sewing machines for a women's project or new chairs for a district meeting.

On the other hand, countless things that are still fully functional and useful are thrown away every day. In private households furniture lands on the tip, because they no longer correspond to current taste. A company gets state-of-the-art PCs and suddenly has the old ones left over. On a cruise ship, towels and bedding are disposed of because they no longer meet the required standards.

Since 2009, we have been bringing together the needs of social institutions and their users in an uncomplicated and unbureaucratic way with surpluses from private households as well as from companies in various sectors. In doing so, we are particularly connected to companies from the maritime industry, because the initiative to found a club was created between docks and gantry cranes. To this day, many club members have their professional focus in the vicinity of the port and as an association we like to follow the custom in the harbour, where it's a case of actions, not words.

The heart of our work is our website www.der-hafen-hilft.de. Searchers and providers can contact each other directly here. In addition, nonprofit organizations can receive smaller items for their daily needs directly from our donation centre for and with their clients.

We are happy to inform other network participants about our work or to establish contact with other organizations from our work in the Hamburg area.
