About us

The Mathare Foundation, founded in 2013, is a community based organization that provides educational programs and mentorship for disadvantaged youth in the Mathare slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

Mission Statement
To train and create opportunities for children and youths in media, performing arts, sports, and leadership skills so that they become better citizens in their respective communities.

Our Vision
To be a reputable organization in assisting children in the slum in media trainings, performing arts and sports so that we promote world peace and enhance improved livelihood for children and youths in Mathare slums.

What We Do
• Through hands-on training and technical workshops in photography, performing arts, athletics, and stay in school programs, young boys and girls from Mathare can build confidence through learning new skills, discover opportunities for income generation, and envision and plot a course for future career opportunities in media, sports and arts.
• Mathare Foundation offers free classes and organizes events in performing arts, photography, and sports. The purpose of these classes is to train and create opportunities for children and enhance their leadership skills. These classes and events are meant to help disadvantaged children, nurture their talents, and make them engage in productive initiatives.
• Mathare Foundation also participates in raising awareness of the challenges of life in Mathare. We have been featured in CNN, Nation Television Kenya (NTV), and QTV Kenya.
• And while powerful factors such as drugs, alcohol, and crime can keep children from completing their education, this is compounded by the reality that many families in Mathare struggle to afford basic school fees. In 2017 after four successful years of youth programs, we developed the Mathare Education Fund in partnership with the British High Commission to financially support the education of 62 students. This fund has been critical in keeping many of our trainees in the classroom, and we aspire to expand this arm of the Mathare Foundation to ensure all of our trainees have access to the funds necessary for completing their secondary education.

Eric Omwanda Nehemiah is the Executive Director at Mathare Foundation.
