About us

The Enviroschools Foundation is a not-for-profit trust that supports children and young people to be active citizens, contributing to ecological regeneration and the creation of healthy, resilient, peaceful and sustainable communities. Enviroschools was launched in 2001 as a nationwide programme following a pilot in the 1990´s and multi-year development phase.

We have…
• A nationwide network of people and organisations working together, sharing best practice and taking action for healthy, resilient communities.
• Youth and student leaders - with knowledge and skills about environmental, economic and social change, many hundreds of young people, well networked and influential amongst their peers and in their communities.
• A strong bicultural approach, with a Kura Māori programme and integration of Māori perspectives into the English medium schools programme - improving understanding about indigenous solutions to green development and creating a base for working with the many cultures in New Zealand.
• Models and mentors at all levels - model schools, mentor teachers, expert facilitators, all with a high level of expertise about environmental learning and action.
• Thousands of environmental and sustainability projects being undertaken in schools, neighbourhoods and whole communities; they include ecological restoration, zero waste, sustainable building, energy efficiency, green technology, organic food and healthy water and much more!

The programmes run by The Enviroschools Foundation aim to empower and enable individuals, families and schools to work together to create healthy, peaceful and sustainable communities. Building strong connections and trusting relationships is at the heart of this, as is fostering a culture of creativity and sharing.
We have a network that embraces 230,000 children and young people, through three programme areas:
• Enviroschools: a holistic action-based approach to education for sustainability in schools and early childhood centres through which children and young people become catalysts for change in their families and the wider community.
• Te Aho Tū Roa: working in te reo Māori immersion contexts with tamariki and rangatahi, whānau, hapū and iwi. (Te Aho Tū Roa is a national jam programme where rangatahi will explore stories from the past.)
• Youth and Community: youth and community initiatives to support positive change, run in partnership with the ReGeneration network.
