About us

The activity of the working group "Denkmalpflege e.V." goes back to the year 1985. While the activities consisted at the beginning of security and maintenance work on the endangered monuments most of which were used for ecclesiastical purposes, after the year 1989 it was possible to expand the field of activities, to include the public more and to improve the contacts to similar initiatives and organizations.

Today, the association is a network of initiatives and private persons who are active in the fields of preservation of historical monuments, culture, ecology and youth welfare work. The working group "Denkmalpflege e.V." has accepted responsibility for several architectural monuments in Thüringen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxon-Anhalt to guarantee that these buildings will be restored, find an appropriate use and be filled with life again.

Our intention is to guarantee not only the restoration of the building mass but to make steps in direction of a vivid dealing with old buildings. The common work shall always be a also learning together, the process of building shall not only be focused on the objective, but it shall also be possible to experience the way. Within the framework of a restoration with the objective to preserve the monument we fall back upon hostorical carpenter techniques, we fill compartments with clay as we did before, recover old building materials to reprocess and reuse them. The claims of preservation of historical monuments and ecology often merge into one another. Most of the work is done by voluntary helpers who are trained by a firm circle of experts who are also responsible of the corresponding work: curators of monuments, architects, civil engineers, restorers, art historians and craftsmen.

Cultural activities, educational and meeting work start very often already during the repair work. In the largest object, castle Lohra, series of concerts, exhibitions, seminars and courses on subjects referring to the preservation of historical monuments and restoration as well as work meetings for the networking of initiatives to preserve historical monuments belong to the regular programme.

We offer overnight accommodations for other net participants in Saxon, Thüringen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We give expert advice, deliver expert opinions, give lectures and communicate up-to-date specialist information and arrange for contacts in the fields of preservation of historical monuments, building ecology, open meeting and cultural work, legal advice for building lease, property right for charitable sponsors. Our areas of activity are Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxon-Anhalt, Saxon and Thüringen.
