About us
RIPPLE Africa is a UK registered charity working to improve local education, healthcare, and the environment in Malawi, Africa. Founded in 2003, RIPPLE Africa’s activities are based around the rural village of Mwaya in the Nkhata Bay District of Malawi. RIPPLE Africa operates at a grassroots level, involving the community in all aspects of its activity.
RIPPLE Africa stands for "Recognizing Individual Potential and Promoting Local Education," and it is the charity's motto to give a hand up, not a hand out.
RIPPLE Africa’s Mission
• To improve the standard of education and healthcare
• To preserve and sustainably develop the environment
• To create opportunities for local communities around Mwaya on the northern lakeshore of Lake Malawi
Projects
Education — Supporting local pre-schools, primary and secondary schools, a community library
• Eight pre-schools: We train and pay the salaries of 24 pre-school teachers, and schoolbuildings have been built
• Five primary schools: We pay the salaries of 15 trainee teachers, and school blocks have been built
• A secondary school and a secondary school bursary scheme,: We have built Kapanda Community Day Secondary School and continue to support it. There is also a Bursary Scheme, experimental gardens, etc.
• We have built Mwaya Community Library and an adjoining reading room
• Supporting university students
Healthcare — Supporting local healthcare facilities and projects
• Two community health clinics: We have built a local health dispensary at Mwaya and have contributed to other building projects
• Volunteer doctors and nurses work at the local clinics
• Volunteers are involved with health awareness programmes and community vegetable gardens for malnourished children and HIV sufferers and work on outreach programmes
Environment — Conservation, tree planting, fuel efficient cookstoves, etc
• We work with Chiefs, communities, and government to establish conservation areas and bylaws
• About 100 community tree nurseries are supported and indigenous, quickgrowing and fruit trees are grown
• We have developed and are introducing the RIPPLE Rocket fuel efficient cookstove
• Beekeeping projects and improved agriculture projects are being introduced to the communities
Megan Canning is the UK Projects Manager of RIPPLE Africa.
For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
