About us

Pro-biodiversity Conservationists in Uganda (PROBICOU) is an organization composed of a group of Professional Conservationists and Enthusiasts that was set up in early 1998, registered as an Uganda Non- Governmental Organization.
As an organization, we hold true to three core commitments: to improved community livelihoods, sustainable utilization of natural resources and to the long-term prosperity of the organization.

The mission of PROBICOU is "To conserve biodiversity by promoting sustainable development through shared responsibility and networking".

PROBICOU has mainly three programmes;
• Biodiversity conservation: Under this program, PROBICOU conducts awareness raising campaigns on biodiversity conservation. PROBICOU also carries out research geared at biodiversity conservation and climate change. Lobbying and advocacy campaigns on the protection of endangered species are undertaken by PROBICOU under this program.
• Waste management: The most important intervention in this programme is to carry out projects that lead to the reduction of wastes in Uganda. We are in for the promotion of sustainable projects such as reducing, recycling, and reuse. This is done through sensitization, action research and lobbying for better laws in regard to better waste management practices. Other current activities of PROBICOU on waste Management include: Advocacy work against the use of incinerators in disposing off medical waste from health care facilities and other public institutions; Compilation of basic data on electronic waste; Solid waste management through clean up exercises; Community sensitization; Research on environmental friendly waste management technologies.
• Chemicals management: Under this program, PROBICOU undertakes research, documentation and conducts awareness campaigns on proper chemical management practices. PROBICOU networks with key stakeholders in promoting awareness about chemical management. Industrial mapping exercise and identification of toxic industrial chemicals and processes.

Robert Tumwesigye Baganda is the Programmes’ Coordinator of PROBICOU.
