About us

The non-profit organisation “Verein zur Förderung von Schule, Alphabetisierung und Gesundheit in Hispaniola” (Society for the Advancement of Schools, Literacy and Health in Hispaniola) was founded on 26.11.1999 owing to the alarming figures of poverty and the education situation in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The aim of the society is the improvement of the school situation and of adult literacy as well as the provision of basic health care. The main objective is to enable every child who is school-ready to attend school and achieve a school leaving certificate. But the focus is also on increasing the quality of education.

We consider it a further task of ours to inform people in Germany (and the Netherlands) about poverty and the meaning of education, by means of specific examples. The target group is the entire population, but schoolchildren in particular.

Projects:
• The renovation or extension of existing schools and/or the building of new schools in the provinces of Peravia, San Juan and Elias Piña in the Dominican Republik. The local people provide a plot of land, the authorities supply furniture and are responsible for staff costs and any later costs. We pay for the planning, the materials and the wages.
• Since 2009, participation in the completion of schools being built and the extension and building of new schools in the province of Grand´Anse in Haiti. In addition to our Haitian partners who carry out the construction, before building begins we look for a second partner who will finance the running costs in the long term. Thus, also in Haiti, our financial involvement ends on the completion and handover of the school.

Work in Germany:
• Acquisition of funds
• Publicity by means of publication in newspapers and magazines, talks and presentations, brochures and flyers which the Society produces, but also by exhibitions of pictures and teaching materials for schools.

Barbara Becker and Michael Heiming are the presidents of the Society for the Advancement of Schools, Literacy and Health in Hispaniola.

On request, we can offer other net participants advice and provide up to date information and contacts in the field of our work.
