Sobre nosotros

Starfish is a non-profit, humanitarian organization incorporated in Colorado, founded in 2007, that has programs in rural Guatemala and Mexico. Its mission is to empower young women through education and mentorship to become leaders in their community

Starfish One by One is dedicated to serving as a catalyst for the education of rural Mayan girls in Guatemala. We hope to enhance the educational opportunities as well as the spiritual and emotional well-being of children and their families, one by one. Parents, mentors, and other organizations are our partners in creating support groups for our scholarship students. These children will become the agents of change for their families and their communities.

Our target population is rural Mayan adolescent girls in the Lake Atitlan region of Guatemala.

Our purpose is to identify and nurture community leaders through mentorship and education of these young women.

Our programs use children’s education, mentorship, leadership training and community development to work toward the long-term goal of breaking the generational cycle of poverty.

Our programs:
• Academic scholarships
• Accompaniment of mentors- “Programa PODER”: The mentor is a woman who is from the same community as the girls and shares their dialect. She also shares the experience of poverty, a large family, and parents who never attended school. Mentor’s are university-level professionals who model the behavior and skills that each girl needs to be an effective professional and leader in her community.
• The bridge- “Programa Puente”: With the support of a career guide, each girl is challenged to create and follow a life plan that outlines her short, medium, and long-term goals.

Starfish One by One does occasionally have volunteer positions available in Guatemala and in Colorado.

Travis Ning is the Executive Director of Starfish One by One.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.

The most powerful force of change on the planet is a girl.
Only 5% of indigenous girls in Guatemala complete primary school.
Starfish combines education with mentorship to unlock the talents of adolescent girls in Guatemala.
