About us

Racist riots and racist thinking have become a threat to a peaceful society. There are many people who would like to make a stand against this development. There is, however, uncertainty about what racism is and how to go about combating it. Phoenix is an initiative dedicated to overcoming or reducing racism. To achieve this, Phoenix works at both the individual biographic and the cultural, societal levels. Phoenix is a grass roots initiative, founded by the black German Peter Brandt in 1993.

Through its training sessions, Phoenix hopes to help bring discussion of racism out into the open and to help whites gain a realistic idea if its dimensions. We would like to get away from assigning blame or individual failure and instead open up a sense of white responsibility and intercultural cooperation.

To this end, Phoenix offers:
• anti- racism training sessions for white participants,
• empowerment training sessions for black Germans and migrants – the so-called ”people of colour“,
• advice and counselling for victims of racist violence,
• talks, activities and training sessions on the subject of right wing extremism,
• involvement with anti-racism in the education sector,
• contact with various allies to combat daily, structural and organised racism and right wing extremism at home and abroad.

Phoenix consciously works in an intercultural combination. There are both black and white trainers.

Andreas Mann is the director of Phoenix.
