Sobre nosotros

Orangutans in Peril e.V. was founded in 2007 by scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Orangutans in Peril e.V. supports projects from partner organizations in Borneo and Sumatra and is active in regional environmental education in Germany. Our special strength is the cooperation with other associations and organizations.

Our vision is to protect the last wild orangutans and their home, the tropical rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

Projects in Borneo
• Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine: The sanctuary near Tanjung Puting National Park looks after 300 animals. Confiscated and traumatized orangutans find there a new home. With their conspecifics they are prepared for a life in freedom.
• Reforestation in Lamandau: A protected area of the size of Hamburg is one of the last retreats of orangutans and other species on Borneo. Through reforestation the diversity of the area is improved to provide the animals with better living conditions.
• Environmental education: To sensitize the Indonesian people for orangutan protection and rainforest preservation we work together with the Indonesian nonprofit organisation Yayorin. In environmental education centers, adults and children learn more about these complex issues.
Projects in Sumatra:
• Orangutan release site in Jantho: At Pinus Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh Province, Sumatran orangutans are released into the wild. For surviving they need intensive monitoring.
• Orangutan Haven: Since 2017 we have been supporting the building of the "Orangutan Haven". Close to the city of Medan in Northern Sumatra, a facility is created that will serve as a home for orangutans that cannot be released into the wild due to illness or disability. In addition, "Orangutan Haven" will provide environmental education for the local population.

Environmental education in German
We organize information stands for interested people to learn about orangutans, about their endangerment and what can be done for their protection. In a playful way, children find out all about the red apes. In addition, we offer teaching materials (German) for free download.
