Partners for Life Advancement and Education Promotion (PLAEP) is a faith based non-profit organization located in Kitwe, Zambia. The organization started in 2005 to partner with others in addressing the devastating effects of HIV in Kitwe communities and beyond. PLAEP core activities include HIV/Aids prevention services; economic strengthening initiatives for low income communities and individuals, particularly women and girls; livelihood and education support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs).

Our Goal
Our Goal is to contribute to the improvement of the health, social and economic well-being of vulnerable individuals in target communities in Zambia through education health, advocacy and economic empowerment.

What we do
Child Welfare and Development
• School Support: Each year, PLAEP provides more than 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children with access to quality education both within and outside Musonda School, with PLAEP providing sponsorship for children from the preschool level all the way through college.
• Daily Nutritious Meals: PLAEP provides more than 800 nutritious meals every school day, which plays a key role in encouraging children to attend and remain in school, while also supporting their difficult journey out of poverty and poor health.
• Girls Sanctuary: The PLAEP Girls Sanctuary provides a safe, nurturing home for vulnerable girls, offering daily spiritual mentorship and a dignified living environment that equips each girl to flourish academically and grow into a confident, self-reliant young woman.
• Trauma Counseling

Health and Wellness
• SHARPS And Safe Haven: Peer-delivered Sexual Health Rights and Psychosocial Support (SHARPS) supports pregnant and breastfeeding adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living with HIV in Kitwe and Lusaka. The project expands access to stigma-free, peer-led psychosocial and sexual and reproductive health services through clinic and community collaboration, helping participants build resilience and self-worth.
• Smart Choices: Smart Choices is a 6-hour seminar that equips young people with decision making skills, with a focus on understanding STIs including HIV/AIDS and how sexual choices can impact their life goals. The workshop combines education on HIV transmission with a spiritual dimension, helping participants see their own value and worth. It uses videos, games, and interactive activities to make learning engaging.
• Mentor Mothers Programme: This project works to prevent HIV transmission among women of reproductive age, reduce unwanted pregnancies among HIV-positive women, and ensure access to lifelong ART during pregnancy, labor, and breastfeeding. Central to the approach is PLAEP’s recruitment of “mentor mothers,” HIV-positive community members aged 19 to 49 with at least two years of PMTCT experience. These women have accepted their status and are willing to share their experiences with peers. After receiving training in PMTCT and HIV care, they conduct community outreach to increase demand for maternal and newborn health services.
• Youth Spaces: PLAEP’s “youth friendly corners” programme provides adolescents with access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) services and knowledge in a safe, welcoming environment. In 2016 and 2017, two youth friendly corners were successfully established at Ipusukilo and Riverside clinics, both located within PLAEP’s catchment communities.
Economic Strengthening
• Community Savings And Lending Groups: Formation of community savings and lending group using the Grassroots building Our Wealth (GROW) Self Help Groups(SHGs) model. SHGs are groups of not more than 30 people derived from poor households who have a common background, are facing similar financial constraints and are interested in improving their incomes. This model harnesses the practices of group savings in a way that requires no outside capital, only a lockable metal cash box, financial recording books, three keys and basic financial training.
Environmental sustainability
• Renewable Energy: We work to combat energy poverty and climate change, providing rural communities on the Copperbelt Province with economic opportunity and clean energy solutions.
• Tree Planting: PLAEP works with hundreds of small-scale farmers on the Copperbelt Province to promote the growing of indigenous and value trees to create forests and increase carbon capture. The farmers are provided with training and tools and encouraged to set aside part of their lands for agroforestry activities.
• Waste Recycling: Our mission is to promote recycling as a crucial step towards a sustainable future. Together, we reduce landfill burden, conserve resources, and minimize waste’s harmful effects. Through collaboration, education, and innovation, we empower individuals to make recycling a daily habit.
