Sobre nosotros
Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) is a science-based organisation working to protect Africa’s seas and communities for the benefit of all who live on the continent. By sharing knowledge, resources and expertise and inspiring cooperation and collaboration, SST enables people and organisations across Africa to work towards and drive the blue economy for the long-term wellbeing of all who live on the continent.
Our Vision
A future where the people of Africa and her seas flourish together.
Our Mission
To strategically address waste in the environment, beyond plastic, and support sustainable waste management practices in Africa towards the prevention of marine pollution, a key risk to the blue economy.
To operationally achieve our vision, SST has developed a four-pillar approach:
• Operational Pillar 1: What We’re Learning (Research, Development and Monitoring): We design well-structured, high-quality research programmes to generate comprehensive understanding of the challenges impacting sustainable waste management in identified coastal communities, and interventions to support this in partnership with existing stakeholders.
• Operational Pillar 2: What We’re Teaching (Education and Capacity Building): We design and develop appropriate and relevant high-quality resources for implementation, at scale, across Africa to support education for sustainable development and waste management across the packaging value chain.
• Operational Pillar 3: How We’re Working (Strategic Stakeholder Engagement): We provide an enriching and collaborative membership and partnership experience. Our integrated community clean-up project, Operation Clean Spot, allows us to gather measurable results and will help develop design principles for a cohesive approach towards waste management across stakeholder groups in the packaging value chain.
• Operational Pillar 4: Where We’re Helping (Community Upliftment and Enterprise Development): We work collaboratively with communities to upskill and empower identified SMMEs and informal collectors operating in the recycling and waste sector, equipping local authorities to support sustainable waste management behaviour in their communities, and supporting local businesses in the packaging value chain to reduce waste generation.
For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
