About us
Meyana Foundation, founded in 2022, is a women-led organisation working to build climate-resilient communities across Africa.
We work at the intersection of climate action, gender equity, education, and livelihoods, with a strong focus on young women and girls from marginalised communities. Our approach is practical, communitydriven, and rooted in long-term impact.
Our vision
Our vision is to see communities that can adapt, withstand shocks, and thrive despite climate, social, and economic challenges. Our vision is a socially inclusive climate-resilient Africa.
Our mission
Our mission is to provide the modern tools and skills needed for all to succeed in the 21st century.
Our work
Meyana Foundation focuses on building climate resilience through skills, livelihoods, and systems that empower women and girls. We work in contexts where poverty, climate shocks, and gender inequality intersect, particularly in rural and marginalised urban communities.
Our work responds to real challenges such as energy insecurity, food insecurity, and barriers to girls’ education and wellbeing. By centering women as leaders, technicians, and change-makers, we contribute to stronger households, healthier communities, and more resilient local economies.
Our focus
• Poverty: In Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of girls face education barriers due to period poverty, a lack of menstrual products and facing societal taboos. Zambia alone has an estimated 2.1 million affected girls, leading to school absences and health risks from makeshift solutions. This perpetuates low academic performance, early sexual activity, and high dropout rates. Meyana Foundation addresses these challenges by empowering girls with menstrual health resources and education, aiming to eliminate period poverty, boost school attendance and performance, enhance self-esteem, and promote community engagement.
• S.T.E.A.M.: At Meyana Foundation, STEAM education is fundamental, fostering curiosity and creativity among students. Integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, it promotes inquiry, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Beyond technical competence, STEAM encourages students to take risks, engage meaningfully, and persevere through challenges. This holistic approach prepares them for tertiary education, careers, and life, equipping them to innovate and adapt in a rapidly changing world.
• Mental Health: Menstrual health is intricately intertwined with mental well-being, as evidenced by symptoms such as depression and mood swings commonly associated with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). PMS affects about 95% of women, while PMDD impacts approximately 10%, significantly impacting their emotional health. Meyana Foundation stands committed to advocating for enhanced mental health care for young girls and women, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues across all socioeconomic backgrounds. By recognizing the profound connection between menstrual health and psychological well-being, the foundation strives to empower individuals to manage their health comprehensively and achieve their full potential.
• Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy: The Meyana Foundation equips students with essential skills in entrepreneurship and financial literacy to foster confidence, innovation, and economic empowerment. Through workshops, mentorship, and practical experiences, we teach students to identify needs, develop solutions, and launch ventures while mastering money management, budgeting, and investment strategies. These programs prepare students to make informed decisions, build generational wealth, and contribute meaningfully to their communities’ socio-economic development.
Programs:
• PoweredUp by Meyana is a women-led renewable energy program that trains and employs young women as solar technicians. The initiative equips participants with practical skills in solar installation, operations, and maintenance while expanding access to clean, reliable energy in communities affected by power shortages.
• Meyana Artificial Intelligence for a Rescilient Africa (MAIRA) is an intensive artificial intelligence and digital skills programme that prepares young women for emerging opportunities in the AI-enabled economy. Delivered in partnership with BongoHive AI Lab, the programme develops practical skills in AI, data, and digital problem-solving.
