About us

Somaliland Women Development Association (SOWDA), founded in 1988, is a women-led NGO based in Hargeisa and have branch office in Mogadishu, delivering peacebuilding, protection, life skills, water & sanitation, and livelihood programs across Somalia and Somaliland.

Our Vision
A prosperous and resilient Somalia and Somaliland where women, youth, and children live in dignity, have equal opportunities, and actively participate in building peaceful, sustainable communities. We envision a future where every individual can reach their full potential.

Our Mission
To empower vulnerable communities in Somalia and Somaliland, particularly women and children, through integrated development programs that promote self-reliance, dignity, and sustainable livelihoods.

SOWDA Goal
To work towards the assistance of the women and children society groups in Somalia and deliver high impact, cost effective and culturally competent capacity building programs.

Objectives:
• To mobilize, coordinate, and address key issues in primary child education, youth and women's skill development, and their participation in national development decision-making processes.
• To help women achieve economic empowerment and self-reliance by equipping them with necessary skills and education through various technical training programs, income-generating initiatives, and promoting the self-help group approach.
• To identify and enhance the roles of youth and women in national development efforts, while advocating against violence directed toward children, youth, and women.
• To establish and strengthen conflict resolution, peacebuilding, water, and natural resource management committees in target communities.
• To promote national protection and primary health awareness in Somaliland/Somalia through public campaigns, community meetings, and capacity-building workshops.

Our Core Programs
Comprehensive, community-driven programs addressing the most critical needs across Somalia and Somaliland.
• WASH: We provide emergency and sustainable access to safe clean water and sanitation facilities.
• Education: We support education in Somalia through various activities including school feeding programs.
• Protection: We prioritize GBV and protection, ensuring the safety and dignity of vulnerable populations.
• Health & Nutrition: We provide vital healthcare and nutrition services to South Central Somalia, addressing acute needs.
• Food Security, Livelihoods, and Resilience: We help improve access to food for vulnerable IDP and host community by providing agricultural support.
• Shelter: We provide sustainable and dignified shelter to vulnerable communities affected by crises.
• Skills Development: We equip youth and women with marketable skills for sustainable employment and entrepreneurship.

Ibrahim Ismail is the Executive Director of Somaliland Women Development Association (SOWDA).

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
