About us
Life Choices is an innovative and impactful youth development organisation based in Cape Town. We work in schools, communities and from our Campus in Lansdowne, investing in young people so they can reach their potential. Since 2005, we’re impacted the lives of more than 200,000 people from the Cape Flats.
We believe there are five building blocks that can assist youth to thrive.
• Family Stability
• Health & Wellbeing
• Leadership & Life Skills
• Education & Skills Development
• Employment & Work-Readiness
Our programmes operate across all these building blocks so that young people can know themselves, access caring youth-friendly support, gain vital life skills, and get ready for their future.
Programmes:
• Family Affairs: Our Goal To improve the capacity of caregivers to deliver competent, quality parenting to children despite adverse circumstances. Family Affairs empowers parents with knowledge and skills through the parental skills workshops; it supports the mental well-being of parents by providing one-on-one counselling and psychosocial support. Once parents have completed the workshops they are invited to join support groups so that they can continue to grow together and strengthen their families.
• HEALTH4LIFE: Our Goal: To holistically support the well-being and resilience of learners so that they make healthy life choices, have improved life chances, and are free to thrive. Health4Life provides youth-friendly health services in schools and hard-to-reach communities. The focus is on holistic support so that youth can make positive and healthy choices throughout their lives
• Leaders’ Quest: Our Goal To shape a generation of youth leaders who are emotionally strong and mentally fit, and who know who they are and where they want to go in their lives. Leaders’ Quest empowers young individuals to become impactful leaders. We achieve this by providing a comprehensive program that focuses on developing personal leadership skills, fostering a deeper understanding of self and society. Through our afterschool initiative, participants gain essential life skills, engage in practical experiential and group activities to reinforce their learning, and receive personalised one-on-one coaching and psychosocial support. Our ultimate goal is to equip these young people with the tools and mindset to take ownership of their lives, make responsible decisions, dream ambitiously, plan effectively, and reach their full potential as future leaders
• Life Choices Academy: Our Mission To provide young people from underserved communities with a pathway to access meaningful employment in future-focused growth sectors, currently focused on the ICT and green economies. Through three technical training streams, we provide youth with the technical skills coupled with the professional/personal development skills and psychosocial support to successfully transition into work in the growing ICT and green sectors. Each of the courses includes valuable work-integrated learning through internships and company-focused project work. The three projects are: YouthCode: This is our flagship coding programme (formerly called Life Choices Coding Academy) that combines 6 months of training with 6 months internship either in LC Studio (Life Choices’ onsite web development house) or with external partners. YouthForce: This is a new project launched in 2024 that trains youth for Administrator and Developer positoins in the Salesforce ecosystem. Life Choices is a Salesforce Workforce Development Partner. Solar Youth: This project is run with our technical partner GREEN Solar Academy and it trains youth with an electrical background to become solar PV technicians
• Safe and Healthy High Schools project: The Safe and Healthy High Schools project aims to contribute to a South Africa with empowered and passionate youth equipped with tools and resources that allow them to make informed and positive life choices. The project focuses on the school ecosystem and the learners within it. It aims to craft safer and healthier spaces for learners – providing access to information and resources that help them navigate their path to adulthood; access to counselling (both individual and group) that assist them with life challenges; access to programmes that provide tools and resources to help them achieve in life – and to support the staff and the parents of the learners to adopt practices that broaden this impact by strengthening relationships and building resilience. The Safe and Healthy High Schools project is a three-year pilot that combines our existing Health4Life, Leaders’ Quest, Wellness and Family Affairs programmes into a comprehensive Schools-based initiative.
