About us

heimatBEWEGEN is a nonprofit association founded in 2017 dedicated to cooperative urban and regional development in the northeastern Harz foothills. We work in a bottom-up, participatory, and locally rooted manner.

Our goal: a livable future for everyone—through concrete projects, new alliances, and a respectful and inspiring culture of cooperation.

Our Mission
• We aim to facilitate lifelong learning, preserve existing knowledge and skills, and pass them on. We believe that every person has a talent! We want to encourage, foster, and support people so they can develop their individual and collective potential in a self-determined way.
• We aim to raise awareness of alternative forms of economic activity and bring people with good ideas together. We are convinced that the conscious and responsible use of resources, combined with a corporate philosophy centered on participation, fairness, and the common good, is the foundation for the future.
• We want to develop joint projects that are important to us and our fellow citizens for our city and the region. We want to create a place that welcomes everyone and enables everyone to help shape the city and their home, to contribute ideas, to think along with others, to get involved constructively, to be creative, to feel at ease, to experience support… .

What we do
• We create spaces for participatory shaping and self-efficacy.
• We initiate concrete projects that function as small real-world laboratories of a caring democracy: they combine education, design, art, culture, and everyday skills.
• Active in a structurally weak region, we repurpose vacant spaces for the common good, revitalize existing buildings through architectural and cultural enhancement, and create open spaces for gathering: for learning, working, and living together.
• We strengthen social infrastructure, promote participation and responsibility—and invite people of all generations to contribute their talents and actively help shape their surroundings. This gives rise to “unconventional alliances” between civil society, local government, and the business sector—beyond rigid jurisdictional boundaries. The administration learns from practical experience.
• Our formats foster trust, competence, and courage—and make political culture more participatory.
• heimatBEWEGEN is a space for cooperative regional development, a network for engaged people, a catalyst for new forms of coexistence, and a bridge between everyday life and the system, between aspiration and feasibility. The framework and foundation for the development of joint projects are:
• The association invests in the attractiveness of its home region—preserving and shaping its home and taking responsibility for its region. The association realizes its vision by maintaining various special-purpose operations, thereby fulfilling its mission.

Projects:
• heimatLABOR: As part of our knowledge workshop, the heimatLABOR, specific questions on topics such as urban development, tourism, crafts, environmental protection, sustainability, care for the elderly, infrastructure, art in rural areas, or marketing are explored with interested citizens and local stakeholders from business, politics, and civil society, and further areas of action or projects are derived. We view heimatLABOR as a form of cooperation and dialogue with society, in which mutual learning in an experimental environment takes center stage. The multifaceted nature of our heimatPROJECTS provides a solid foundation for extensive networking and, through its diversity, aims to appeal to an equally broad audience with highly individual needs and life situations.
• heimatHOF Gut Ziegenberg is a volunteer-run community center
• Kunstkurort Zauberberg: Places to listen, feel, understand, and participate
• heimatKUSTODIE: With this project, our aim is to share the memories, experiences, history, and stories of the people here
• Orchard sponsorship
• heimatDIGITAL: With heimatDIGITAL, we want to leverage the possibilities of digitalization for efficient project management and citizen participation. The goal is therefore to develop and establish a digital association culture.
• heimatHOF inclusive: With heimatHOF, the project sponsor also aims to embrace the topic of inclusion and create needs-based offerings and conditions both inside and outside the buildings that allow all guests—not just those with disabilities—to experience and engage with the challenges of daily life together.

Upon request, we can provide consulting services for other network participants, give a presentation, and share up-to-date technical information and contacts in our field of work.
