About us

Our association smile4 Madagascar (formerly Baobab, founded in 1998) aims to develop measures in various hotspots in Madagascar that will help to develop the respective region in a long-term and sustainable manner. To this end, we work closely with the Madagascan population, Madagascan partners and authorities.
We pursue this goal in the areas of nature, health and children. We help to build structures in these three areas and, above all, to impart knowledge and skills. Our aim is to ensure that our help is no longer needed as quickly as possible. We also provide immediate emergency aid to people in need through annual surgical missions or epidemic programmes!

Our vision
We provide interdisciplinary assistance in establishing structures and skills in various areas and disciplines in Madagascar so that our help is no longer needed as quickly as possible. In doing so, we also ensure that we alleviate the greatest suffering of poor people in need so that they are not left waiting until later, when the structures are ready.

Smile4 Nature
The problem: A natural treasure in danger and threatened with destruction.
The solution: Education and regional development could change the future for the better! Small projects with a snowball effect: The aim of these projects (beekeeping, plant cultivation, vegetable growing, cultivation of vanilla, cloves, pepper, coffee and lychee, poultry farming, cutting and tailoring, basket weaving, etc.) is to secure the basic needs of the population living in and around the nature reserve so that the jungle is not further destroyed.

Smile4 Health
Problem: Many people have no access to medical care, including plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The solution: Plastic surgery, which is part of basic medical care here, e.g. after accidents, injuries and burns, or congenital malformations, provides lasting help to people. In addition to improving the quality of life of individuals, our goal is to transfer know-how to local doctors. Since 2008, Smile4 Health has been providing volunteer medical teams to perform plastic surgery operations on site. Our missions are carried out in cooperation with local hospitals and doctors. We involve local doctors in the preparation stage, train them during our stay and instruct them in the aftercare of our patients. We support them with medical consumables and are available to answer questions and share knowledge.

Smile4 Children
The problem: Without education, there is no future!
The solution: Education creates a future! At smile4, we try to support these visions for the future through school partnerships (‘La Columba’) and school projects in Beza Mahafaly (‘Beza Programme’). We also support Sunday schools in Antananarivo and a children's home.

Dr. Ingo Plötzeneder is the chairman of smile4 Madagascar, Head of Health.
