About us
Mobile Hilfe Madagaskar e.V. (MHM) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Münster. We carry out our practical work in Madagascar.
Our primary goal is to improve medical care in the catchment area of our home base and through our mobile facilities in a sustainable manner—even beyond regional borders. In close cooperation with our partner organizations Tulisa Foundation, Pro Interplast Seligenstadt, Ny hary, Airtel, Mantasoa Mission Station, Deichmann Foundation, HoverAid, and Johanniter Hilfsdienst, we contribute to improving people's living conditions in the long term and setting an example of what high-quality medical care can look like.
Our work is characterized by compassion and charity. Our actions are based on the Christian view of humanity. We treat all patients with dignity and respect. People without means receive free medical assistance from us. Our special focus is on the poorest of the poor, especially women, children, and families.
MHM Germany
The non-profit association Mobile Hilfe Madagaskar e.V. was founded in 2010 by Tanja Hock with the support of her family and friends. This created the legal and financial basis for the work in Madagascar.
A central concern of the active association members in Germany is fundraising to support the valuable work. This is achieved through, among other things:
• the sale of homemade jams and handcrafted products
• presentations of the association's work at conferences
• attendance at community festivals, Christmas markets, and similar events
• crowdfunding via social media channels
All proceeds from these activities go directly to the association as donations.
Another focus is on applying for grants and large donations, especially for the construction and equipping of the hospital, training and further education, and covering ongoing operating costs.
MHM Madagascar
The work in Madagascar began on a small scale. Thanks to the trust of the population and the acceptance of our offer of free medical care, the project has grown steadily.
Today, we employ around 160 people from a wide range of professions – all of whom are Madagascan. For them, working at MHM means a secure job with a regular income. This enables them to provide for their families and often allows their children to attend school for the first time.
Around 90 employees work in the medical field, including:
• Doctors and dentists
• Midwives
• Nurses and anesthesia nurses
• Dental assistants
Other employees work in administration, finance, logistics, purchasing, warehousing, catering, cleaning, hygiene, technology, and mechanics. We also have our own construction and technology department that oversees construction projects.
Trained social workers and occupational therapists work with the children, while a security and gardening service takes care of vegetable cultivation, security, and building maintenance.
Our work is regularly supported by European volunteers, who also contribute to the further training and education of our employees.
What we do
• Inpatient and outpatient care:
In Ambovo, we offer outpatient and inpatient medical care for over 20,000 residents from 14 surrounding villages. This includes: general medicine, dentistry, obstetrics, preventive medical checkups for children, treatment of sick children, occupational therapy, kids' clubs, and educational programs.
Medical care is provided around the clock. An ambulance is available for mobile operations to pick up patients from their homes or other facilities and, in rare cases, transfer them to other hospitals in the capital.
• Mobile medical assistance
Our first mobile unit was the midwife mobile, which has been in operation since 2009. It provides care to: homeless people in the capital (at night); four rural villages; a small prison. Regular basic healthcare—at least once a month—is bringing about lasting change in these areas. Since 2012, a dental mobile has been supplementing this work, visiting the same areas at least twice a year. The midwife mobile is staffed by general practitioners, midwives, and an occupational therapist who also cares for the children.
Since February 2025, we have expanded our mobile operations through a partnership with HoverAid and the Deichmann Foundation. The Madagascar Mobile Clinics (MMCs) bring qualified medical staff, diagnostics, and therapy to remote regions that are far from any medical care.
• Obstetrics and child development
Our work has its origins in obstetrics – Tanja Hock is a midwife and this is her passion. It all started in a small delivery room at a Nehemia e.V. health station that was part of a school project. In 2018, this health station was expanded into a hospital within nine months and opened shortly thereafter. The positive experiences of families with qualified prenatal care and obstetrics led to a desire for expanded pediatric care and services. Today, we have a licensed pediatric department for outpatient and inpatient care, as well as the Schlittenhardt Kinderparadies. There, children can play, learn, and achieve important developmental milestones. Our kids' clubs also take place in the Kinderparadies. Children from the catchment area and surrounding schools come together with their teachers every week to play with educational European toys and receive support.
• Training & cooperation
We place great importance on training. Our employees are our most important resource.
We support them both linguistically (English is the project language and is taught) and professionally in their respective fields of work.
Through strong cooperation, we are continuously expanding the scope of our work—because together we are stronger.
For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
