About us

AKHRI – Mothers and Daughters Literacy is a nonpartisan, registered Canadian charity and a 501(c)(3) organization in the United States. The organization is dedicated to empowering girls and women by breaking the cycle of illiteracy and unlocking their full potential. They focus on creating access to education, opportunity, and dignity for underserved communities. AKHRI works to erase barriers in education through basic literacy, education, and market-driven job skills training. The organization is committed to helping girls and women reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives.

Our mission
Our mission is to empower underprivileged girls and women in urban and rural communities by fostering lasting, positive, and community-driven change through literacy, education, and market-driven job skills training. We strive to break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for brighter, self-sufficient futures.

Our vision
We envision a world where every girl and women is provided the opportunity to learn and feel safe while in school, complete at all levels of education with the skills to effectively compete in the labor market and prosper with dignity.

Our work
AKHRI has been active in promoting literacy skills among the rural mothers and daughters of Somaliland, fostering friendship between the people of Canada and the people of Somaliland. The organization was created in 2017 by a group of Canadians in Ottawa, Ontario, with the goal of promoting literacy skills among the rural mothers and daughters of Somaliland.
AKHRI is also involved in fundraising efforts to support girls' education in Somaliland. They have organized fundraisers like the Mount Kilimanjaro Hike 2024: A Journey for Girls’ Education, raising funds to provide access to education for girls in Somaliland.

Programs:
Through combining research-based programs, mentoring relationships, and providing a supportive, pro-girl environment, we equip girls to navigate economic, gender, and social barriers. Ultimately, it is our aim to help girls grow up to be educated, healthy, and independent.
• Phase one: Provide effective literacy program to rural girls and women.
• Phase two: Extend the literacy program to marginalized communities in Daami.
• Phase three: The literacy program was also offered to areas where pastoralists (displaced persons) live. In the state house: Suburb of Hargeisa.

AKHRI in Canada
• Canada Engagement & Youth Opportunities: Through scholarships, student placements, youth discussion circles, and community engagement initiatives, we continue to nurture leadership, civic responsibility, and meaningful social impact.
• Nimo Ahmed Scholarship for Future Leaders (Ages 16–25): Established in 2022, the Nimo Ahmed Scholarship recognizes exceptional students aged 16 to 25 who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, and dedication to community service.
• Community Engagement and Volunteering: AKHRI actively engages youth across Canada through participation in fundraising galas, literacy campaigns, community outreach, and cultural celebrations. We also host youth discussion and knowledge-exchange spaces, where young leaders come together to explore global development challenges, share ideas, and learn from one another—strengthening their voice, awareness, and engagement in social issues.
• Student Placements and Experiential Learning: In partnership with Canadian universities and high schools, AKHRI offers meaningful experiential learning placements for students seeking course credit or volunteer hours. Through these placements, students gain hands-on experience in non-profit operations, communications, program development, and international development.
