Über uns
Women’s Initiative Lesotho (WIL) is a registered grassroots, women and youth-led collective committed to advancing gender justice, climate justice, accountable governance, sanitation and hygiene etc in Lesotho. Rooted in feminist and people-centred values, WIL’s leadership and membership are primarily rural women, youth and communities who have lived experience of injustice and systemic exclusion. Since 2022 we’ve been working with amazing organisations to create meaningful initiatives and impact within our community.
Our Mission and Vision
We envision a world in which women and youth are empowered for sustainable development and to equip women and youth with innovative skills, knowledge and awareness for sustainable development.
Our Core Pillars:
• Climate Justice & Resilience: We work at the front-lines of climate change, where rural women bear the heaviest burden of a crisis they didn't create. Our work builds the resilience of communities to adapt, recover, and thrive — while pushing for the structural change that climate justice demands.
• Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture: We support rural communities to farm in ways that protect the land for the next generation — restoring degraded soil, safeguarding water sources, and putting food sovereignty back in the hands of the women who feed their families and communities.
• Gender Justice: No woman or girl should have to live in fear. We work to end violence against women and girls through community education, advocacy, and the steady work of shifting the norms that allow harm to continue.
• Green Skills & Economic Empowerment: We equip women and young people with the skills to build sustainable livelihoods not waiting on opportunity, but creating it through the green economy.
• Inclusive Governance: Rural women are too often missing from the rooms where decisions about their land, water, and future are made. We work to put them there strengthening their voice in the policies and institutions that shape their lives.
Our initiatives:
• Greening Mafeteng Initiative: This is a large-scale reforestation initiative targeted to climate vulnerable areas in Lesotho aiming at planting 50000 annually.
• Climate Change Dialogue and Up-cycling Training: This project was meant to raise awareness and initiate open dialogue specifically among women and youth on climate change and its impact on the environment. and to capacitate women and youth in upcycling skills and knowledge.
• Strengthening Rural Community Resilience for Climate Change: In partnership with Ministry of Environment and Forestry-supported by Hlanganisa Community Fund. This project is a bold step that was aimed at enhancing the adoption of sustainable strategies to enhance climate resilience. It shifts power to local communities to co-create climate solutions through evidence, equity and innovation.
• Strengthening Community Resilience: Funded by the Feminists for Alternatives on Climate and Environment (FACE) Programme this project provided training to over 100 women and young women on agroecology, organic farming and water conservation techniques and planted over 100000 fruit and forests trees in over 5 communities in Mafeteng.
• The Futures Initiative: The Futures Initiative project with the Community of Ha Lengolo Mafeteng supported by the German Embassy Pretoria. Through this project, we were able to empower over 100 smallholder farmers from Kolo, Ha Petlane, Boleka Manyareleng and Ha Maholi, Thabana Morena Ha Lengolo, Ha Mosotho, Ha Bagomi and Thabaneng Mafeteng with a focus on women, youth and persons with disabilities with hands on training, seeds and trees and garden tool kits. This Initiative was meant to enhance household food security, foster economic dependence and resilience.
