Über uns
The Somaliland National Youth Organization, widely known as SONYO Umbrella, is an independent, non-governmental, non-political and non-profit national youth organization founded in June 2003. It was established to coordinate, represent and strengthen youth-led organizations while promoting the meaningful participation of young people in Somaliland’s social, economic, civic and political development.
SONYO Umbrella brings together youth-led organizations, associations, student unions and higher-education institutions from across Somaliland. Its governance structure consists of the General Assembly, the National Council and the National Secretariat. The General Assembly is the organization’s highest decision-making body, while the National Council provides strategic leadership, policy direction and institutional oversight. The Secretariat, headed by the Executive Director, manages programmes and daily operations.
SONYO envisions an inclusive and democratic society in which young people are empowered to realize their full potential, have equitable access to opportunities and participate actively in national development. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of young people through services and programmes supporting their social, physical, intellectual and economic development.
The organization’s principal areas of work include:
• Youth leadership and institutional capacity development;
• Advocacy, communication and protection;
• Peacebuilding, democratic participation and civic engagement;
• Employment, livelihoods and entrepreneurship;
• Environmental protection and climate action;
• Research, youth coordination and networking; and
• Inclusion and empowerment of young women and marginalized youth.
Over the years, SONYO has trained thousands of young people in leadership, organizational development and life skills. It has supported youth entrepreneurship, promoted young women’s leadership, conducted youth-focused research and coordinated nationwide advocacy campaigns. Its advocacy contributed to the development of Somaliland’s National Youth Policy and reforms that expanded opportunities for young people to participate in local political leadership.
SONYO works with government institutions, civil-society organizations, universities, development partners, communities and the private sector. It is committed to transparency, accountability, good governance, human rights, mutual respect, innovation and public service.
SONYO Umbrella has collaborated with national and international partners to advance youth development, inclusion, peacebuilding, protection and civic participation.
