Über uns

AHPPA (Asociacion Humanitaria para la Proteccion Animal de Costa Rica) was founded in 1992. Its board is completely voluntairily. The association exists of donations, alone.

It started out with just a few small cages for some stray dogs and cats. Over the years, AHPPA has added 30 large tiled pens for dogs - all of which are covered to protect the animals from wind and rain.

It has 2 fulltime vets on staff, who take care of the animals at the shelter. The on-site veterinary clinic is complete with surgical tables, ultrasounds and other equipment. Our X-ray machine and darkroom are recent additions to tend to all the fractured animals, who are brought in frequently at the shelter.

AHPPA vaccinates, deworms and neuters the animals before they leave the shelter. All adoptions are free, but any donation is welcome. There are about 80 dogs and 50 cats adopted out per month. It puts to sleep the incurably sick animals.

Costa Rica's former solution to animal overpopulation was to poison the animals in overcrowded areas. AHPPA's sterilization program has put a stop to this terrible practice.

Mrs. Lilian Schnog, dutch citizen, living 20 years in Costa Rica, is the president (ad onorum) of the only animal shelter in Costa Rica.

For other net participants we can offer overnight facilities. Further we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion and deliver a lecture in the field of our work.
