Qui sommes-nous

Since the summer of 2015 about 400 volunteers have helped to teach German to refugees. Altogether we offer 11 daily units on up to four levels. Our offer extends to a vast range of people, from (primarily) illiterate migrants to advanced learners (B1). Our Hispi is colourful. At Hispi, people from a diversity of cultures, countries and societies meet to be able to learn, to be noticed, to feel good and to help. Here, everybody is allowed to be him- or herself and to grow beyond what she or he was before. In 2018 Hispi became part of SOPHIA::Akademie gGmbH. This makes sure that we, as a former citizens’ initiative, can receive donations and grants.

Our mission
Learning German means learning to understand Germany. Language is the key. Our language conveys our values, the way we think and how our society communicates. Without adequate knowledge of German, immigrants face barriers that prevent them from accessing education, the labour market and social participation. Their needs and attitudes remain incomprehensible to us Germans as long as we have not found a common language. We want to prevent the development of parallel societies, so we would like migrants to become parts of our social system as quickly as possible. Mutual respect and mutual acceptance are the basis and our values for our involvement in Hispi.

Courses:
• Literacy / ABC group: Here you can learn if you feel insecure when writing or reading the letters and would like to get more practice.
• Low threshold courses aiming at level A 1: Here, basic expressions and contexts are taught. It’s a good introduction into the German language.
• Low threshold courses aiming at level A 2: If you have already made some contacts with German and understand simple sentences and short texts, you will feel all right in this group.
• Low threshold courses aiming at level B 1: The participants here have perhaps already attended other courses and would like to practice and, above all, talk more. The texts are more demanding already.

Projects:
• Hispi for U – RE:Match: In cooperation with the state capital Düsseldorf, we organised a 7-week programme for 15 Ukrainian women as part of the RE:Match project, providing support and information about life in Germany. Various workshops and a German language course were organised for this purpose. Another component was the invited experts who provided information on the job centre, school and social system, banking and health insurance.
• Erasmus + project in adult teaching »Creative FEM-Power«: Our project »Creative FEM-Power« focuses on developing, testing and evaluating language teaching modules as well as career planning of female migrants by making use of creative methods.
• Hispi-LAB – Learning for training and job (in German ’Ausbildung und Beruf’): Individual help with your homework and all the subjects you need support for.
• Hispi goes Ehrenamt: In this project, we suggest that advanced learners do volunteer work, where they can apply what they have learnt and do something helpful at the same time. Depending on the varying personal interests we support the future volunteers in their search for an appropriate job and offer help with their applications.
• Art workshops in co-operation with the cultural office: This is guided by a professional artist who teaches you facts about painting with oil, and you also get information on the European history of art.
• Photographic Project in co-operation with AJA: The AJA Project offers young people and communities who have long been underrated a platform to use the power of self-expression in a creative way.
• ntegration workshops: In October 2015, weekend workshops were devised at Hispi in order to inform the newly arrived migrants about our constitution and our way of life. There have been lively exchanges about differences and similarities between the countries of origin and Germany. In January 2016 a new version was created to cater for the different needs of adolescents. The two-day-workshops are offered once every three months.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
